I was going to do this whole series of posts on transitioning from the law of attraction to black magick. But, the inspiration just wasn’t hitting me. It never felt quite right.
I’ve been receiving a lot of messages to be more authentic and to just come out with what I really want to say. So, here we go. ?

Today I’ll be talking about embracing darkness.
Darkness is something that people tend to try to avoid. It makes many people quite uncomfortable, so they’d rather pretend it doesn’t exist.
But, it absolutely does exist. It is a real force, just as light is a real force.
And as a black magician, I have learned to embrace that darkness and even to use it in my workings.
But what exactly is darkness? Why would we want to embrace it, and even to join ourselves to it?
Experiencing Darkness
When I first got deeply into black magick, I was led into an experience of darkness that would change me forever. After this experience, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that this path was right for me.
The experience was of darkness. There was a meditation I did that brought me into contact with this darkness.
I realized then that darkness is a force. It is conscious, and it is intelligent. And, it has no light in it. It is pure, unadulterated darkness.
When I say there is light, and there is darkness, I mean that literally. Light exists as a force, yes, but so does darkness.
Those who say that darkness does not exist—that only good or light exist—do not know what they’re talking about. Darkness is a real force, and anyone can experience it quite easily.
When I entered into this darkness, it was palpable. I could sense it all around me. And once I discovered it, I could tap into it at any time, just with a second or two of focusing.
The more I touched that darkness, the more I wanted of it. I wanted to become a part of it; I wanted to become it. And, I have done just that.
I realize all of that sounds rather vague. “Who really cares about an experience of darkness?” you might be saying.
But darkness isn’t just in the singular experience of it in meditation. Once noticed, once touched, and once accepted, it begins worming its way into your life—into your thoughts, words, actions, circumstances. It becomes part and parcel of your day-to-day experience.
It is the door that once opened, cannot so easily be closed again.
What Is Darkness?
So what exactly is this darkness?
Firstly, it is not evil. Evil is not the same thing as darkness, and good is not the same thing as light. In fact, I’m dubious as to whether good or evil really exist at all, besides in the minds of humans.
Darkness, as I said, is a force. It is a primordial force that has existed before all creation, and will continue to exist forever, because it is outside of time.
When you think about it, it is obvious that darkness is preeminent. Light requires a source to keep it in existence, but where does darkness come from? It simply is, always. Darkness is there when you turn out the light. Darkness is there when the sun goes down and the moon has not risen. Darkness is there, prior to and beneath all existence.
We tend to be afraid of darkness because it represents everything we have tried to get away from. It represents chaos, anarchy, rebellion, disorder, even death.
And yet truly there is no escaping it, because it is eternal—it is the only thing that is truly eternal. The light will be extinguished, the sun will die out, and all that will be left is darkness. It represents, too, then, our inevitable end.
But like everything in the universe, it is conscious—even intelligent. I will not go so far as to say it has a personality, for darkness is omnipresent and far removed from any idea we might have of personality. But, it is conscious. It can communicate. It knows us—who we are and what we are made of.
Why Embrace Darkness?
As I said earlier, many might be asking, “Who really cares? There are lots of things in the universe. Why should I care about darkness?”
You should care because you must, one day, choose a side: light or dark.
In today’s popular spirituality we are taught that there is no dark, and everyone is a lightworker. It doesn’t matter what you do, because it’s all truly OK. Your spiritual decisions don’t really have any meaningful impact. You can walk any path, and later on change that path a thousand times, and there are no consequences. It’s all just light anyway, so who cares?
But there is darkness. And one cannot reconcile the light with the dark. They are opposing forces. They have very little in common.
So by not making a decision, of either light or dark, you are essentially crippling your spiritual evolution. If you chose either the light or the dark, then you could walk upon that path, but when you insist upon choosing neither, you stand still, doing nothing of consequence.
The Path of Light
The light is about conformity. A moral code is passed down from on high, and you must live according to that code. You must lessen yourself so that you may become more and more united with God, or the One, or however you want to call it.
On the path of light, it doesn’t matter what you want. The Universe/God/Divine has a perfect plan laid out for you, and to question that plan is the highest arrogance.
So, don’t wish for money. Don’t pray for love. If you try to manifest that job, what if it isn’t for your highest good and you’re actually taking it away from the other who needs the job more? These are all considerations on the path of light.
The ultimate goal of this path is union with the All. It is to totally kill off your individual consciousness and merge with the All. It’s enlightenment, moksha, nirvana, the beatific vision. You have given up all of yourself so that you may be that much closer to God.
The Path of Darkness
On the other hand, the path of darkness is all about freedom. It is rebellion against the order—the refusal to be enslaved and to serve any other.
If you notice, as humanity has distanced itself from darkness, it has also become more controlling. As it has created civilizations and religions, it has dictated more and more how one must live. “Do this, and don’t do that.”
The darkness cares nothing for such precepts. It revels in sin, or what the popular civilization or religion of the day sees as sin. It revels in rebelling against the order, in doing what should not be done, because it can.
That doesn’t mean those of darkness need be criminals or anything of the sort. The child of darkness has no interest in breaking laws just for the fun of it. But they are against oppression, needless authority, and excessive control by those believing themselves to be in power.
Ultimately what the darkness is really about is freedom. Freedom to do what you choose, to live as you choose, to experience what you choose. And it will remove any who might try to curtail that freedom.
If light is about becoming one with God, then darkness is about becoming your own God. It is about acknowledging no one higher than yourself. You are the supreme ruler of your reality. You reign over your life, deciding what that life should look like, and how you should live it.
The black magician does not ask, “I wonder what my purpose is?” He proclaims, “This is my purpose,” and then he lives it.
These are the ideals of that force of darkness. If you embrace the darkness, that is what you, too, will stand for. That is what will shape your life, and each decision you make thereafter.
I’m not here to tell you to embrace light or to embrace darkness—only that you should choose. Certainly gather the necessary information first—learn what you must learn to make an informed decision. But choosing neither is no choice at all.
I will tell you that as for myself, I have embraced darkness. I am a sorcerer—a black magician. My aim is the dark ascent, by which I may become God of my reality.
Helpers Along the Path
Both those of light and those of darkness have helpers—guides and allies who are there to help them to fulfill the aims of their path.
The helpers of that path are beings composed entirely of the substance which defines that path. In other words, helpers upon the path of light are entirely made of light, while helpers upon the path of darkness are entirely made of darkness. They are the personifications—the individuated consciousnesses of that force, which can interact with and help you on a far more personal level.
The helpers of the path of light are, of course, angels. Angels serve the highest good, wanting to help humanity to become one with God. Angels generally won’t give you money, a relationship, career, etc, unless such is expressly in service to your spiritual evolution towards union with the Divine.
The helpers of the path of darkness are, probably just as obviously, demons. They are those to whom I have been alluding in my emails for some weeks now, without ever coming out and saying it.
Just as darkness is not evil, so demons, too, are not evil. They just personify darkness, in their own individual ways. Each demon is a separate entity unto themselves, with individual personalities and specialities. But, they all represent darkness, and are made of darkness. They don’t get a choice in that matter, nor do angels get a choice in being of light. We, as humans, are the only ones with such a choice.
Demons are here to help us to become gods. They are here to help us to fulfill our every desire, and to undergo the dark ascent. Basically, they are here to fulfill the will of the black magician, whatever that might be.
Note a few things:
- They are not here to harm.
- They are not here to drag you off to Hell.
- They do not want your soul. They’d have no use for it.
- They will generally not try to trick you.
They are here for one reason: to help you to ascend. They believe in freedom, just as darkness stands for freedom.
Notice how the serpent in the book of Genesis only brought knowledge, and thereby freedom, to Adam and Eve. While that story is of course allegorical, what sin did that serpent really commit? It only encouraged them to think for themselves.
That’s exactly how demons are. They want you to think for yourself, and to realize the power that you inherently possess. They want to help you to unlock that power, and to become the God you were meant to be.
I’ve worked with them for some time now, and quite honestly it’s been a beautiful experience. I won’t tell my stories yet in this post, since it is already getting long, but I do have stories, and I will tell them.
Suffice it to say that my work with demons has been the most fulfilling work of my life to date. I have found them completely different than the popular conception would have you believe. They are helpful, powerful, generous, kind, and protective.
There’s far more of this to come in future posts. I’m beginning a new podcast, The Dark Ascent Podcast, to be released on January 11. And in our first episode of that podcast, we’ll be discussing the topic, are demons really evil? So you’ll get to learn plenty more then.
But hopefully this has been a good introduction to the darkness and the beings of darkness, and why you might want to choose this path.
How About You?
Now it’s your turn. Knowing what you now know about light and darkness, what appeals to you more? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Melektoth, what an amazing and inspiring post! It gave me chills whilst reading it (you know, the good sort of chills, not of the “eeww, that’s creepy!” kind). I’ve been following LOA for a few years now and recently have started to feel something is missing. I also find the constant emphasis on Light and Lightworkers alienating and superficial. As you so eloquently put it, good is not the same thing as light. In fact, many self-proclaimed Lightworkers or other people embracing Light that I’ve met have been judgmental, manipulative, authoritarian and emotionally toxic. Not all of them, of course, but way too many. I don’t want to become the same. I’m not any more “enlightened” or “noble” being than any other creature experiencing this world. I just want to create a life I genuinely enjoy and expand my power and purpose as far as possible. Looking forward to your upcoming blog posts and podcasts! Keep on rockin’ 🙂
Thank you for your beautiful comment! I’m glad that you enjoyed the post.
I agree that many lightworkers can be judgmental. It also tends to be very disempowering in my experience. Darkness for me is far more empowering and allows me to take control of my life.
