I was asked yesterday what exactly “releasing” is. I’ve been discussing it more recently, but in case some have missed my blog posts where it is discussed, I thought I’d define it today.
Releasing, in short, is the opposite of resisting. It is synonymous with letting go, allowing, accepting, or welcoming.
Imagine you pick up a pencil. You have two options: to hold on to it, or to let it go.
That’s how our thoughts and emotions work. You have the choice of either holding on to them, or letting them go.
How do you let them go? Well, you simply stop holding on to them.
Of course there is potentially a lot more to it than that, but that’s basically what it comes down to. Releasing is just a choice, to let go of whatever you were previously holding on to.
It’s also the realization that you have complete power over your own thoughts and emotions. They aren’t holding on to themselves: you are keeping them with you by refusing to let them go.
Many times we protect ourselves with fear. It feels like to let go of these negative thoughts and emotions would cause our world to fall apart. Of course, no such thing happens.
Our fear pulls us down and keeps us stuck where we are. When we let go, or release, we are free to move forward and create something new.
Have the courage today, then, to let go of everything that bothers you. It is totally your choice, and no one else’s to make.
