Christine has been posting these fun icebreakers on Facebook lately, which can often evoke some interesting responses.
Well, yesterday’s was this: what would you do if suddenly you received a million dollars?
And I’ll be honest, I was shocked, and admittedly a bit disappointed, by the responses I saw.
So, I decided to take an informal poll of the comments she received, and here’s what I found:
Out of 20 responses, can you guess how many people said they’d make that money work for them—to actually invest it and find ways of becoming even wealthier from this hypothetical lucky break?
I thought perhaps half would say that, so say 10 people. But no, it wasn’t that many.
Only 4 people made saving or investing a serious part of their plan if they found themselves with some significant money.
And one of those 4 was me, lol.
So out of 20 people, only 20% would do something smart with that money.
The other 80% of respondents said they would do things like:
- Take a vacation around the world
- Buy their dream house
- Give to charity
- Give to their church
- Spend it on their children
- Just generally buy some nice things
Of course most people said get out of debt, pay off bills, and so on, but I’m not counting that because that’s the obvious first thing to do. I’m counting what people said they’d do after getting out of debt.
There’s nothing wrong with any of these things in themselves. But, once that million is gone, it’s gone, and you’re back to your regular life.
Giving to charity might seem virtuous, but how much more good can you do when you regularly give a small percentage of your ever-growing income to charity, rather than throwing a large chunk of it at them all at once, leaving you with nothing left?
Same goes for church, if that’s your thing.
Going on vacation, buying nice things—these are all things that can be part of one’s life, after one looks to their long-term financial security.
Okay, you may be asking why I’m giving financial advice to you, when I’m an LOA teacher, not a financial adviser.
So fine, let’s make it spiritual. Believe it or not, Jesus actually spoke to this exact type of situation:
For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. (Matthew 25:29)
It comes after a very pertinent parable where some man is going on a journey, and entrusts his wealth to three servants. Two of those servants double the wealth they are given (it literally says that they “put his money to work”), while the third servant just buries the money so it doesn’t increase at all.
I’d love to see what Jesus would say to someone who not only buries the money, but actually squanders it.
The point is, if you treat money responsibly, the Universe will happily send more your way. But if you spend what you have, even when given a windfall, then it’ll be harder to manifest more money in the future.
Those who are wealthy, contrary to popular belief, do not go around spending as much as they can. This is the problem when people try to “act as if” by buying a lot of expensive things. They’re not acting like a wealthy person at all.
Wealthy people know that they are wealthy, and don’t need to prove it by having a lot of nice things.
One of my family friends as I was growing up came from a rich family, and was a millionaire herself. But you would never know it by talking to her. She had an average house, average car, etc. Nothing was ostentatious about her in the least.
So the question is, what are you doing with the money that you have? Are you “putting it to work”, so that it will grow, or are you burying it so nothing will happen to it? Or, even worse, are you letting it go as soon as you receive it?
