When I was a freshman in college, I really wanted to be a music major. I was told by everyone I knew that I should be, because of my performance at a talent show the university held.
The issue was that I didn’t believe I could. The music school was very prestigious, and their requirements seemed beyond what I was capable of offering.
But, I knew I really wanted it. So I spent that entire first semester training myself in music theory, which my own piano teachers had neglected to teach me in the past. I was extremely good at performance, but my theory was severely lacking.
And so that December, 2007, I auditioned for the music school, still not quite believing I could do it.
But, can you guess what happened? I was accepted! I even went on to win a performance award the following semester.
The following year, there was another guy I knew who wanted to get into the music school. He had already auditioned twice, and failed.
So, seeing as I had trained myself, I offered to help him out as well, and he gratefully accepted.
All went well at first, with him coming to our practices and starting to pick up on the theory.
But then, he just stopped coming. Every time I’d contact him, he’d make excuses, saying he had just been busy or something had come up.
So, come audition day, you can guess what happened: he did not get accepted, and ended up transferring to another university.
I tell this story because sometimes in life, the odds seem to be against us.
But it is what we do in these situations that really defines us: will we press forward anyway, or will we admit defeat?
The Universe doesn’t care about probabilities. It only cares about what is possible—and as I always say, anything is possible.
The only question is whether you will focus on probabilities, or on possibilities.
Hugely successful people have beat the odds, perhaps on several occasions. They just assumed that what they wanted was possible, and ran after it with 100% commitment.
Those who give up because it is too hard, or it just seems like things won’t work out, will never achieve success until they change their attitude.
