Several of you have been discussing spell work lately in the comments, so I thought it might be a good idea to discuss the mechanics behind how to cast a spell.
Why might you want to know about this? Spell work can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be. And, the principles are precisely the same as the law of attraction. But, since magic has been studied for millennia, while the law of attraction has only been studied for a bit over a century, there is much more known about the intricacies of using magic.
Plus, who doesn’t want to cast a spell? 😉
What Is Magic?
Before we discuss how to cast a spell, there is one very important question to discuss, first: what exactly is magic?
I can’t possibly hope to answer that in one post, as magic is one of the most complex, intricate arts in existence, and there are many differing, at times conflicting views on it.
I take my sources from my favorite magician, Aleister Crowley, plus various witchcraft traditions, and my own experience.
What’s important to note is that my opinion is just that—my opinion. If you should pursue magic, and this includes via the law of attraction, since that indeed is also magic, then you will have to test these principles for yourself.
Magic as a Science
Crowley saw magic as a science. He believed that if you did X, you got Y as a result, every time. If you didn’t, then you did X wrong.
Here’s a telling quote from his book, Magick in Theory and Practice:
Thus its fundamental conception is identical with that of modern science; underlying the whole system is a faith, implicit but real and firm, in the order and uniformity of nature. The magician does not doubt that the same causes will always produce the same effects, that the performance of the proper ceremony accompanied by the appropriate spell, will inevitably be attended by the desired results, unless, indeed, his incantations should chance to be thwarted and foiled by the more potent charms of another sorcerer. He supplicates no higher power: he sues the favour of no fickle and wayward being: he abases himself before no awful deity. Yet his power, great as he believes it to be, is by no means arbitrary and unlimited. He can wield it only so long as he strictly conforms to the rules of his art, or to what may be called the laws of nature as conceived by him. To neglect these rules, to break these laws in the smallest particular is to incur failure, and may even expose the unskilful practitioner himself to the utmost peril. If he claims a sovereignty over nature, it is a constitutional sovereignty rigorously limited in its scope and exercised in exact conformity with ancient usage.
I agree with a great deal of the above, though not all. To understand Crowley’s view of magic, you have to understand the worldview of most magicians. Here I refer to ceremonial magicians, not practitioners of witchcraft.
Magicians see themselves as more or less the center of the Universe. Their will is final, as long as they are adhering to the universal laws as they have been laid out. If they are to work with another being, it is to be among equals, at best. This is why they’re not extremely favorable towards working with deities.
I hold more or less the same view, but, like most witches, I don’t see deities as beings to be worshipped. I see the gods as beings who have immense experience, and who can help me with specific areas of life. I see it as a relationship.
Also, as I’ve discussed before, I do believe that sometimes an intention can be stopped for your highest good. It is rare, but has happened enough times that I can’t discount it.
The Definition of Magic
Now, at last to the definition of magic I adhere to, and which also comes from Crowley, and also from the same book:
Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will.
Notice how he spells magic with a “k”. He did that to differentiate it from stage magic, which is based on illusion. I just call it magic.
Again, we see that magic is a science. Put in X, you get Y.
That’s why magicians keep a magical record of their practice. Witches often call this a “book of shadows”. Ceremonial magicians will usually call this a “grimoire”, because they like fancier words for everything. 🙂
Notice, too, that the definition is very loose. It says nothing about a wand, circle, or any other tool or prop. There’s also nothing about the words you have to speak.
Really, magic is just changing the world around you with your will. According to Crowley, that doesn’t even mean it has to be done in a supernatural way. If you want a glass of water, and you fetch a glass of water, you’ve just caused “change to occur in conformity with will.” Congratulations, you’re a magician! 🙂
That means that every act is a magical act. You cannot perform an action without that action changing the world around you. You cannot even really speak a word without that word changing the world around you, both mundanely and magically. You similarly cannot think a thought without causing change around you, though that change is much more subtle, and takes much more focused thought to cause such change. However, it is all magical.
What Is a Spell?
In order to learn how to cast a spell, you must also learn what exactly is meant by “spell”.
If magic is to cause reality to conform to your will, then a spell is very simply, a focused magical act with some particular intent.
I mentioned above the simple act of getting a glass of water. Magic is the laws by which that was able to take place. A spell is the focused intent itself which moved the entire operation, as well as the process by which the act of will was carried out.
So to get more specific, if I say, “I want $1,000,” I have the raw ingredients for a spell. But, the spell doesn’t happen until I apply that will to actually cause change to happen. Essentially, a spell is simply a magical act directed toward some end.
In the law of attraction, you might call this simply an “intention”. A spell is the act of focusing on that intention so as to manifest it into your life. It’s all the same thing.
Notice that it’s not a spell until you actively carry out your will. Simply having the intention isn’t enough. Magic is extremely active.
This is why I’ve emphasized so much that it is not enough to just feel good. You have to actively will it, and act upon that will by magical acts, like affirmations, visualization, or any other technique you might use.
At a minimum, you need the will, a focus for that will, and the emotion to move the energy towards your goal. But this is just the start of how to cast a spell. There are many more considerations, which I’ll discuss below.
You Need a Goal
It probably goes without saying, but before you can cast a spell, you need a concrete goal.
A vague goal doesn’t really do the trick. Just saying, “I want more money,” doesn’t really move the energy you need to accomplish the spell, just as I’ve said with the law of attraction.
Not only that, but your subconscious mind, as well as the Universe as a whole, will take the path of least resistance to fulfilling your goal. Technically “more money” could mean $1. 🙂
I’ve discussed the criteria for a goal before: a goal needs to be inspiring, believable, and challenging. The perfect balance between these three qualities is essential to have a successful goal.
Depending on the magical tradition, more requirements may be added on the goal. White vs. black magic isn’t something we’ll get into today, but someone might have the requirement that their magic is for good only. Of course, magic can be used for harm, but that’s up to your personal ethical code. I don’t believe any magic user can or should tell another how to practice magic.
Some people are wary of love spells, too, especially with specific people, because they don’t want to influence someone else’s free will. My own view on it is that we are always influencing other people’s free will. For instance, even for me to do a spell for more clients is to influence enough people’s free will to choose to order from Co-Creation Coaching. As long as you recognize that they have a free will, and can say “no”, then I think it’s fine to do a spell for a specific person to be in your life.
Of course, as always, your goal should be positively stated, and should likely be in the present tense. For example, don’t say, “I will receive $1,000,” but say, “$1,000 is coming to me.”
This may all seem simplistic, but choosing the right goal is an integral part of how to cast a spell.
3 Steps to a Successful Spell
When learning how to cast a spell, there are 3 steps that must be taken into consideration with any magical working. I will describe these steps right now, and later will describe how the law of attraction uses these steps as well.
However, spell work takes these steps to the next level, where far more is possible. I’ll explain why that is later.
The 3 steps of how to cast a spell are:
- Raising Energy
- Directing energy
- Releasing energy
Step 1: Raising Energy
Before you can perform magic, you need the raw material of magic, which is energy.
I’ve talked about energy just about as long as I’ve had this blog. Energy is the creative force behind magic. No energy, no creation. It is what the Universe itself is made out of. It is what your manifestations are constructed of. And, it is the fuel of your spell.
What does it mean to “raise” energy? It simply means to call upon some amount of Universal Energy to be used for a particular purpose.
Energy on its own is neutral and unprogrammed. It is neither light nor dark. It has no intention on its own. Energy is shaped entirely by the mind of the magician, which we’ll discuss later.
Just as in how some appliances require more energy than others, so some intentions require more energy: specifically, intentions that aren’t entirely believable to you right now. The less believable that intention to you, the more energy it requires to manifest.
Creating $20 might require very little energy. On the other hand, creating $1,000,000 might require quite a bit more. It all depends what’s within your comfort zone.
This is where the discussion of the current level goal vs. the next level goal comes in. A current level goal requires almost no energy. Think of the energy required by, say, a can opener. It’s simple and requires next to no power.
On the other hand, a next level goal requires quite a bit more power, because it has more resistance to overcome, and requires the alteration of your subconscious structures. The bigger the next level goal, the more energy it requires. Think of the energy required by, say, a microwave. It requires significant amounts of power to operate, because of its complexity.
In our example, you can plug in a can opener just about anywhere, and it’ll work fine. A microwave, however, you have to make sure can get enough electricity.
When we first moved into our house, all but one of our kitchen outlets were broken. So, we used a surge protector and plugged all of our appliances into it. Any time we’d try to run the microwave and toaster oven at once, the circuit breaker would trip. Finally we got it fixed, though to be honest we’re too afraid to try running both at once in case it trips again, as neither of us are about to take a trip into the basement. 🙂
The point is, there wasn’t enough energy.
So, you need energy for your spell. But, how do you raise energy?
There are countless methods. Some of the most popular ones are repeating an affirmation repeatedly, chanting, visualizing, drumming, dancing, and so on.
Energy can come from two sources: within yourself, or from external forces. Chanting, visualizing, and the like will raise energy through your own system. Using crystals, magical symbols, calling on elementals and deities, and so on, are ways of using external forces. I see drumming and dancing as a mix of the two, as it is great for raising your own energy, but also can help to call on other forces as well.
The more you practice magic, the better you’ll get at feeling energy. You’ll get a sense for how long you should do these practices for. Some will use such techniques for 5 minutes, while others might take an hour. It just depends on the need.
There’s also the matter of how to contain this energy. For basic spells, you can generally contain it within yourself. But the more complex the spell, and the more energy it requires, the harder it is to contain. Plus, if you need to call on elementals and/or gods, you’ll need some help containing them as well.
That’s where a circle comes in. I plan on writing about how to cast a circle in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned if you are interested in that.
Magic circles are important for several reasons: they can contain the energy, keep the area clean of outside influences, keep external forces contained within the circle, keep negative forces outside the circle, etc. If you’re doing black magic or calling on demons, they’re also extremely, extremely useful for putting a barrier between you and the demon. I don’t know much about this as I’ve never practiced this magic myself, but just pointing out that it’s out there. 🙂
Now you have raised sufficient energy, so what’s next?
Step 2: Directing Energy
The second step of how to cast a spell is directing energy.
So you have all this raw energy, either within yourself and in your energy system, or in the circle you have closed. By itself, that energy will do nothing. In order to have that energy act on your will, you must program it. We call this directing the energy.
Some methods of directing the energy are closely tied to the methods of raising. For instance, chanting can be used for both.
The essential difference is that you direct the energy when the raised energy reaches a climax. With chanting, this might mean getting louder. With visualization, this might mean including the full detail of your desire.
Essentially, this is the direct act of will. Before, you are only building things up. But at this point, you infuse the energy with your will.
Raising energy, as mentioned, can take minutes, or hours. Directing energy will generally be a lot shorter, because it doesn’t take much effort to infuse it with your desire. In fact, the less you try, the more effective it’ll likely be. You don’t want to overthink this step.
However, the moment of directing energy should include no doubt within yourself. You should be absolutely certain of what you are doing. Ideally you leave all doubts outside the circle, prior to the spell. But if doubts crop up, then you need to deal with them at the raising stage, when the energy isn’t yet being programmed. As always, the best method to use is the zero state.
To return to our analogy of the microwave earlier, raising energy is like simply plugging in the appliance and knowing the electricity is present. Directing the energy is the act of the microwave actually drawing the electricity. It now has a definite purpose.
While this is the shortest part of the process, it is probably the most important. If your will isn’t precise, then the energy will be scattered.
Here are some examples of directing energy:
- For a money spell, you might write the desired amount on a check, or just a piece of paper
- For a love spell, you might inscribe on a candle the qualities of the partner you desire
- For a spell to release negativity, you might write down the things to be released from your life on a piece of paper
These are just simple examples. It’ll also work if you just visualize or use affirmations. But the above are common enough examples, and you can customize it as you see fit.
Really all that matters is that you believe in it. You can’t just take a spell you find online or in a book, and try to perform it without adding your own belief. Spells don’t work like that. That’s why I am purposely vague here.
Step 3: Releasing Energy
The third step of how to cast a spell is to release the energy that you’ve raised and directed to your goal.
Now you have a great deal of energy programmed to a specific purpose. But, it is just sitting there. In order for it to do anything, it needs to be sent out into the world to accomplish your will.
This is why people in the law of attraction always talk about “letting go”. You have to let go of the energy of the desire once you have evoked it within yourself. Otherwise, it cannot go out and actually align the proper events in order to manifest.
Letting go, of course, does not mean being detached. Being detached from a magical working is the worst thing you can do.
However, you do have to let go to a certain extent. Thinking about your desire all day just holds up that energy and doesn’t allow it to go out. That’s why I tell people not to obsess, and only to focus on the desire a few times a day.
Really, with a spell, it’s better to raise enough energy once, program it, release it, and allow that to be enough for a while. “A while” could be a day, several days, or a week. Because you did a lot of the work up front, you don’t always need to repeat the process. You might visualize your desire in short bursts here and there, especially before bed, but no major effort should be required after this point, until you can see the effect the spell had.
There are near infinite ways of releasing energy. Have you ever noticed how most people, when they pray, will say “amen” at the end? That is releasing energy of their “spell” (which they’ll call a prayer), so it can go out and do what they asked. Some witches will say, “So mote it be.” If you’ve cast a circle, then opening the circle (meaning taking it down after the ritual is complete) will release the energy as well.
Here are some methods you can use to release the energy for the spells mentioned earlier:
- For the money spell, you might put the check in an envelope and set it away until the next full or new moon.
- For the love spell, you would subsequently light that candle that you had inscribed.
- For the cleansing spell, you would burn the piece of paper, or bury it.
Here are just a few ways energy is released:
- Saying some short phrase like “So mote it be”
- Opening the circle
- Ringing a bell
- Clapping the hands
- Snapping the fingers
- Burning an item
- Lighting a candle
- Burying an item
- Imagining your desire being done and dropping the visualization
These are just off the top of my head, but I’m sure there are more. It is any act of finality.
Often these methods can be mixed. You might ring a bell, and then close the circle to clear out any residual energy.
To return to our microwave analogy, this would be when it actually cooks your food. The energy was raised (electricity is available), directed (microwaved draws on the electricity), and now it is released (the electrical energy is converted into a form that can perform the microwave’s task).
As you can see, all 3 steps are clearly vital. If any of them are missing, your desire will not be accomplished. The spell will fail.
But if all three are in place, and you have successfully programmed the energy, then the spell will almost certainly succeed.
How These Steps Apply to the Law of Attraction
I said before that learning how to cast a spell is really indistinguishable from learning the law of attraction. To practice the law of attraction is to practice magic, and to practice magic is to practice the law of attraction.
So let’s take three common techniques and break them down into these steps:
When you use an affirmation, the affirmation will not work unless you feel the desired emotion of having your goal. It is said that you must have a burning desire. Feeling the strength of that emotion is nothing less than raising energy. To speak the affirmation is to direct that energy. To let it go afterwards is to release the energy you have raised and directed.
When visualizing, you must also feel the emotion of having your goal. As before, this is raising energy. The stronger the emotion, the better. The detail of the visualization is directing the energy, because you are telling it that this image is what you want. To let it go afterwards is to release that energy.
Vision boards are another popular method. You must find a picture that evokes strong emotion in you of having your goal. Yep, that’s raising energy. 🙂 As you print out that picture and put it on your vision board, you are telling the Universe that this is what you want—i.e., you are directing energy. Then as you let it go, you have released it.
The great thing is that every time you look at that vision board, you have performed a small spell. You look at the picture, feeling the emotion, and thus raising energy. The picture itself tells your subconscious mind what you want, and so you direct that energy. And then you move on with your day, effectively releasing that energy.
The difference is that most of these are pretty small scale. This is why you have to repeat it often. The more tools you add, and the more you put into raising energy, the faster and more effective the spell will be.
But, that is up to you how much effort you’d like to put in. Just rest assured that every time you set an intention, visualize it, and let it go, you are performing a spell. You have just done magic!
How About You?
Now it’s your turn. Now that you know how to cast a spell, can you see how you’ve been doing magic all along? How do you plan on using these steps to improve your magical ability? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Yeap, this is a very helpful post. (oh surprise xD)
So, raising the energy is actually using intense emotions, and holding them for quite a while, as the visualization and vibration get clearer and stronger. And directing it means applying the will once the energy is very strong, right? So for example, raising and directing energy for at least 30 minutes (maybe even up to 1 hour) for any manifestation when we start working on it, is gonna create a strong momentum. Is that right?
Btw, you said that the paper under a glass of water will change the frequency of the water, as long as the word “love” (or anything else) was written while in that vibration. It does make sense. I assume that the effect of the word and paper will weaken over time, and I’d have to replace it with another piece of paper? Or maybe use the same one, just send my energy to it first, while in a high vibrational state?
Also, I just read this article: http://www.applythelawofattraction.com/lawofattractionlovespecificperson/
It’s about attracting specific person into relationship, and according to the person, it worked many times. Even the amazon reviews are pretty much positive. So I guess that we really can get into (romantic/sexual) relationship with (almost) anyone we want. I wonder if that works always, or the person has to “be a match”. You know, since with the concept of parallel realities, it’s hard to tell for me whether this is infringing someone’s free will, or is it simply shifting to a reality where that person does like us in that way. But then again, I wonder if free will really exists then…
This kind of inspired me to consider manifesting friendship with a specific person. Like, there are specific people that really seem nice, and who I would like to hang out with, but the chances for communication just don’t come up lol. Same thing, if I like a guy in a romantic way, and think about having more communication with him, then every time the Universe will arrange it so we get to meet less and less often. I know that sometimes when someone starts a communication with me, I can easily continue with the conversation, and it flows really nicely. However it gets hard the next time we meet, because there’s seemingly no topic and I have no clue how to start a conversation. And if I do, then the person will not show up that day, or will be unavailable in some way.
Hi Z,
Great questions. 🙂
I would not raise energy for 30-60 minutes without a circle. When I do this without a circle, I raise energy for a maximum of 5 minutes. Maybe 10 minutes if you can handle it. Even in a circle I’d rarely go that long unless I was really enjoying myself. 🙂
So, start out with 5-10 minutes and see what that does for you.
Yes the effect will weaken over time. What is the motivation for this particular spell? You can get similar effects by using crystals, or just by sending the vibration of love to the water itself.
Regarding manifesting a specific person, I do believe it is possible. I have had two clients who were trying to manifest specific people: the first I could tell just was not a match to this specific person, and I told them they should probably let go of that. The second one definitely seemed to be a match, so I encouraged them in that.
I do believe the other person has to be at least mostly a match. The way I would tell is whether it feels like effort and a lot of work. If it feels like you’re trying to flow upstream, then it’s probably not going to work, or at least not right now. I do know there’s black magic that can even still get results, but, let’s be honest, do you want to be with someone that you’ve had to magically coerce to be with you? I don’t think so. 🙂
I always say, try it, but be open to someone else being that match to you. The Universe always has a better idea of who will work the best for you.
Thanks a lot for your replies! First of all, I’ve noticed that for the past month or 2, my vibration has been below neutral, which means the average has been in the negative side, so no wonder things have been going the way they have. I’m actively working on that now, by being grateful, appreciating, focusing on the positive, trusting the Universe, etc. I felt this dull stream of depression while trying to will myself to take a cold shower. I am currently not depressed, but I can feel this “undercurrent of depression/resistance” in the background. That’s what I need to work on.
My motivation for putting this paper under a glass of water is primarily health, but also love and joy. I feel that both my body and my soul need healing, and I love water, so it’s a great opportunity.
And as for romantic relationships, me using magic to attract a specific someone doesn’t feel good to me. It’s an interesting concept, but yeah not my thing. However in the friendship area, there are several people I have no communication with, or barely any, but I feel that we could be good friends. I have such good feeling about them. I would only consider using magic to get that communication going, until we get to know each other more, and then it should be easy to keep it up. But yeah, first things first, I need to raise my overall vibration above zero, to at least slightly positive, which even you suggested is good to spend a day in. Good things can’t come to me freely, if my general state of being is below neutral.
Hi Z,
It sounds like you’re doing all the right things. I don’t remember, but are you meditating at least a few minutes a day, not with any particular goal in mind? I recommend this for raising your overall vibration.
I understand how depression is. Try not to interact with it, or react to it in any way by taking it personally. It’s just a bit of energy that is making its way up from your subconscious mind.
Regarding magic, I’m not saying it can’t be used with a relationship. When I said “black magic”, I was referring to more forceful magic that tries to force a result that is not naturally in the flow. I don’t like doing this. But regular magic, as in what I discussed in this post, or as you’d use with the law of attraction, is perfectly fine and won’t unduly influence anyone’s free will.
I say “unduly” because again, we are always influencing others, even without magic. But, there’s a limit. 🙂
Yeah I have been trying to meditate every day without any goal, either just by sitting in silence, or playing some relaxing music I like. Though I admit that it’s easy to accidentally skip meditating, so I shall definitely make sure that I do have this meditative rest each day. Even time needs good budgeting lol.
Yep, it’s definitely important. Helps you to spend time regularly in the zero state and weaken your resistance. 🙂
If you do a spell for a next-level goal, will that change the subconscious structures? Suppose I do a spell that lasts about a half-hour. Will the subconscious blockages keeping me from attaining my next-level goal really go away in a half-hour? I thought it took weeks or months of practice of intending and releasing resistance, over and over, a little each day. Didn’t you or Justin or someone say you generally could expect a next-level goal change in subconscious structures to take 1-3 months, usually? Or is that just for the weaker visualization/dream board/old LOA methods?
Hi Lisa,
To clarify, I said a next level goal shouldn’t take longer than 1-3 months. I’ve had them within a month before. Sometimes shorter if I really work at it.
Anyway to answer your question, if you can imagine this, the spell will make a much larger imprint on the subconscious mind, not to mention getting the energy to flow a lot faster, than just a couple minutes of visualization or affirmations. The reason is that it has a larger emotional footprint, plus all the symbolism really speaks to the subconscious. The more symbolism used, the more it’ll imprint on your subconscious mind.
So yes, it’ll happen more quickly. But still it won’t be instantaneous. I’d give it a week to see what results start to come. It might take longer than that, but you should see some effects within a week.
Resistance will also likely arise after the fact, but the best thing to do is just to enter the zero state and let it flow through.
You also have to let go of the energy completely after the spell, so that it can go out and start to manifest.
Also you can repeat a spell. Maybe you might repeat it after a week or so to take it that much further. But it’s not something you want to do every day, because it’s going to be creating major change in the subconscious mind, plus in Universal Energy.
Thank you. That is very helpful.
Oh wow, so the book of shadows is the witch’s chemistry lab notebook of sorts? Cool. It makes sense. I find the spells used and posted by others are generally more effective, at least for me.
In white magic, you want to improve your life through freedom, love and knowing that everything will and does work out. I think black magic is based on fear and insecurity and thus operates where you wouldn’t really have any business in the first place, like, the most polular one, dominating over everyone, but hey, this is also the way I see it and my opinion. But I don’t think I’m too far off. In knowing, you don’t need to go there anyway.
You can also bow three times after casting a spell. This is also how prayers end in orthodox Christianity.
Oh, one thing I do notice is that cartoons show a lot about magic. He mans’ sword calls upon the power by going outward first and then the magic from castle greyskull goes through the sword transforming Adam to He Man. Of course Skeltor want to dominate the place and turn everyone into slaves which overall does not work and if it does, not for long, because as they say in LOA circles, the universal energy is not only pro-life but pro-freedom. Of course, there is no judgment, but nature does work this way.
Anyway, this was a great post and hopefully the first of a series. And yes, life consists of spells, all day everyday. The particular question I had about the health spell I think is not working because I seriously think there is something wrong with my knee that aches so much, after resting it for a couple of months. So, I know I’ll need to go have it checked out, but in the meantime, I’d go back to feeling overall health and vitality instead of morbidity. I know that my energy is still high because no one knows I’ve actually been experiencing this pain.
Hi Kat,
I like your description of the book of shadows. 🙂 Yes, I agree. All of this should be very scientific.
Personally I don’t use many spells from others. I find the personal touch to go a lot further, because it uses my own symbolism so it communicates with my subconscious better. It’s kind of like using a dream dictionary to try to figure out your dreams, vs. interpreting it yourself.
But they can definitely work if you resonate with them and the symbols they use. It’s just a personal choice. 🙂
I agree with what you said about white vs. black magic. Black magic, like I said to Z above, is when you try to force things against the flow. You will get a result, but, probably at some cost.
I didn’t know about bowing three times. Very interesting. 🙂 Does this come from a particular tradition?
Yes, in Greek orthodoxy after a prayer you bow three times while touching the floor as well. It is the same concept as you describe. Also, altars are found in churches, along with candles, icons, chanting, insense. You see where I am going with this? Everything is based on the same principles, but people see it as so different. A certain point of view, as Obi Wan told Luke sky walker. Had to add this one in, as Star Wars was on the other day.
Oh yeah, you also go around in a circle three times during ceremonies, called “mysteries” in the Greek Orthodox Church. It is so obvious to me that all religions are based on the same thing. How can people not see this? I answer my own question above.
Oh wow, that one’s interesting, with the circle. That’s exactly what we do when casting a circle. 🙂
That’s great. Love that one. 🙂 Yeah it’s all the same thing for sure.
Kat, I’m sorry to hear about your knee. Have you tried sitting with the feelings that come up when you think about you having that pain, and seeing if some clues come up? I’ll mention Melody again, because the other day I reread that guest post by Nay, where she healed her coughing and wheezing, after she found the correlation between those symptoms and her need for perfection. What I know about my usual body pain is that it feels powerless, and also like a blockage. I think I pretty much know what that all represents, and I’m working on it.
I know that you can go to doctor (and it’s probably a good idea to do so), but let’s remember that if you’d find the cause of the pain and release it, the pain would need to disappear in a short period of time. I’m curious about how body manifests pain and disease in various ways due to resistance.
Honestly I’d manifest health in the same way as anything else. I’m not one to try to see what it is connected to unless that is required. The subconscious doesn’t care. It just knows that it needs to hold on to this, until you tell it otherwise.
So the best thing to do is to imagine being without that pain, enter the zero state as the resistance comes up, and move deeper into the vibration of health.
Trying to investigate the pain, I’d just be very careful with that.
I see. Ok so maybe it isn’t necessary to know what beliefs are creating the pain, but diving into the feelings related to that pain (what Sedona method mentions too) is helpful, right? It’s the same thing that’s a part of the letter to the Universe. I didn’t write the letter before my last exams, but I think I now know that diving into the feeling (its core) is very helpful. Actually I think you mentioned that, too.
So, before my last exams, I kept choosing to pass it, and I felt confident about it, and felt pretty good. However only after I failed the exam did the remaining resistance surface, which I wasn’t aware of. It put me into depression for a few days, but I allowed it, and then it passed through me completely. Right now when I think about failing those exams, I don’t feel negative emotions. Maybe it’s partially because my vibration is still slightly negative right now, but I am sure that that last resistance had to flow through me, for me to get to this state of no worry.
Specifically, my last remaining resistance that had to do with the exams was me trying to avoid failing, trying to avoid parting with colleagues, trying to avoid failing in life again, and getting lost in life. I revved up my confidence about passing, and I felt good, but I wasn’t aware of this crucial resistance.
Hi Z,
In this weekend’s podcast we’re discussing what I’m calling the principle of homeostasis. I think it’ll help with this issue.
But specifically, my question would be, did you use that confidence as a coverup for the resistance underneath? That’s what I can imagine happening.
Something important I say in the upcoming podcast is: it’s not about feeling good, it’s about feeling safe. That is, your subconscious mind doesn’t care so much about feeling good. You don’t have to try to generate those feelings all day long. It does care about what is familiar and safe (which may have nothing to do with what consciously you feel is safe). If failing feels more familiar and safer than succeeding, then you’ll fail, no matter how good you feel about succeeding.
Yeap, in hindsight I see that I was using the confidence as a coverup. I was trying to escape the unwanted scenario. However I wasn’t fully aware of what I was doing, at that time. Diving into the feeling of the “worst” case scenario first, and letting that resistance flow out, would have made me feel okay no matter what the outcome. That goes with what you said before, that ultimately we are always fine no matter what, ot something along those lines. And deliberately choosing to create passing the exams after that would be the way to go, because I wouldn’t be avoiding something, I would just be choosing something that’s not just “okay”, but “awesome”.
At least that’s what I got from my experience with this.
Also I do still find myself seeing other people doing well, and being resentful that I can’t do what they can. Yeap, it’s just a belief, and I’m working on releasing it.
Hi Z,
That’s what I figured.
Diving into it can help, and indeed that’s a method of The Sedona Method. But again it will all come to the surface naturally as you keep choosing your goal, so I don’t do that unless absolutely necessary.
Also, I see your point, but the goal isn’t to become indifferent, but simply to let go enough of the current state of things, and the need for what you want, so that you can actually choose to have it.
B, this is really good: “It does care about what is familiar and safe (which may have nothing to do with what consciously you feel is safe). If failing feels more familiar and safer than succeeding, then you’ll fail, no matter how good you feel about succeeding”.
Is this why we shouldn’t be afraid to fail? Why we should feel comfortable with uncertainty? We thusly feel safe either way. I think this is what Wayne after was getting at.
Hi Kat,
Thanks. 🙂 Yes, but also this is why we should practice the vibration of success. When you practice it over and over in your own mind, the subconscious mind gets the point, and becomes familiarized with this new vibration.
The major point is this (and I don’t want to give away all of Saturday’s podcast lol, but I’ll give a bit): the subconscious mind wants normalcy, not excitement or ecstacy or anything else. It doesn’t care about those things. It wants familiarity.
So the goal is not to feel excited about your desire, but to feel perfectly normal about your desire.
Anyway, it’ll be expanded on in the podcast. 😀

Yes, that’s exactly what is happening! Ok, so vibration of health it is!
I’m excited for your podcast on the principal of homeostasis! I love how you go in depth into how manifesting and the loa actually works ?
Thanks Natasha. 🙂 I think you’ll enjoy it. That, and Monday’s post on how to speed up the manifestation process, should both take things to the next level of understanding.
Z, thank you so much for this! I deeply appreciate it, babe. All my muscle pain go away with rest after a couple of months or so, but this one now. I think I’m misaligned from sitting wrong while I was sick in the fall. I think my pelvis needs aligning.
About the doc, I hesitate to go even though I think I have to, but
I am totally with you, this can be released, I just don’t know it’s origins. No, there’s no powerlessness involved. Perhaps in my case, it’s worry? I always worry about everything and about things not working out and ask myself why I go through the trouble I do, but I shouldn’t because it would be a much smoother ride if I didn’t worry! My worry is like your depression. It’s there, a burden, a thing I carry around, slowing me down, resisting my every move. I wish for it to go, but it thinks it protects me, but it really doesn’t. It complicates my life so much and is even the origin of my illnesses.
Oh, i just had a thought. This worry stems from a desire to impress others and not look foolish and get embarrassed. This is so silly, yet it was ingrained in us during childhood in my house. Naturally, I don’t care what anyone thinks, but this was instilled in me and I’ve been living with it on and off since. I find some prayers and affirmations help with this, but alas, they are only temporary. It’s like this bowling ball I carry with me supposedly for protection, as it told me, but I want to get rid of it, as it casts a shadow on my life rather than letting me do my thing.
I haven’t been on Melody’s blog in a while, but this post you mention sounds really good.
I find this blog does wonders, though, and if you actively participate, even more!
Hi Kat,
I just want to say, I know as spiritual people sometimes we try to avoid treating it physically—i.e., going to the doctor. That resistance itself can be part of the issue, sometimes. I’d be open to however the Universe wants to bring you that health. Sometimes it’s going to the doctor and finding a really simple solution. Sometimes it’s the pain just going away. However it happens, it’s okay. 🙂
“babe” haha xD ♥
Yeah, it might be worry. I’ve noticed that in my case, I get pain in my abdomen in just a few seconds after I start focusing on something negative. If you can notice the times when your pain gets worse (I imagine the intensity fluctuates), then see where your focus was before it intensified, or what events happened right before. I noticed that if I spend a day hating the Universe (thank god this hasn’t happened in a while!), then the next day I get a lot of pain in my abdomen. It’s so easy to see in this case what happened.
I also remember Abraham saying how one day Esther happened to start a negative conversation with a friend, because it flew naturally, and the momentum was there, and then the next day Esther woke up with pain. My guess is that an increase in pain is likely to have its cause the day before (yesterday). Well, you know what I mean. 🙂
Hmmmm. No, that’s not the case here. It just hurts and then I frown and then a worry about getting wrinkles ? But overall, I do worry too much and it is not serving me.
I will instead enter zero as Brandon mentions, and when inpsired, make an appt with doc, who I’m afraid will moan about it as I saw him in Dec, but I reminded them I have some issues, so all must be quiet.
Our new motto should be “it won’t exist if you don’t persist” or, if past tense, “it wouldn’t exist if you didn’t persist”.
It took Dyson decades to get his products on the market, mainky because nobody believed his vision of bagless vacuums and other things, but hey, I’m glad he persisted because reality has sure changed to fit his vision.
I love it. 😀 And I agree. Persistence is key.
Great! I’m glad you like it!
I keep thinking the perfect show for all these topics was How I Met Your Mother. Hopefully you’ve heard of it. In it, the protagonist goes through a lot following his desires and dreams, despite his friends urging him to quit. In the end, the last laugh was his, as he got all that he wanted.
I know lots of people disagree with the show saying that it has nothing to do with reality and it’s pure fantasy, but from I’ve read, life is a fantasy if we follow what we really want. As we have said before, it is the populace that doesn’t do this, so they think it’s a fantasy, whereas to me, it’s reality and you create you’re own. And yes, the protagonist did raindances, and incarnations to be with the girl of his dreams, had to let her go for her to try a life with somone else, had the family he wanted only to go back to her after his wife’s death and her divorce. Of course, we can tell the “mistake” the dream girl made by not marrying him, however, to her it wasn’t, as she had to find out for herself that her love was not meant to be permanent.
Anyway, I digress. The story is not fascinating because it’s surreal, but rather because it’s very real and most people are asleep, this is how I see it.
Incantations

Hi Brandon,
Say I use music as a method to raise my energy. I usually get goosebumps from this then feel really good. So after this, a way to then direct that energy is to affirm or visualise the outcome?
I don’t actually have to feel the specific feelings of the desire? I can just use music as a tool to raise the energy correct?
Hi @Jarrad,
Music is great for raising energy. But then when you want to program the energy, then you do need to feel the specific feeling of the desire. You might start doing this a little even while the music is playing, but definitely once the energy is raised and you want to direct it.
So feel the feeling while you are affirming or visualizing, then release it using any of the methods above, or any that you’re comfortable with. Then try to forget about it for a bit—at least a day or so.
Hi Brandon,
Say I use music as a method to raise my energy.
B, all the add-ons, like circles and chanting so on are just aids to belief, right? It’s the belief which creates the manifestation, and if circles help you believe, then throw that into the mix.
Hi CJ,
Yes and no.
First of all none of it is about belief. It’s about energy flow. It’s about subconscious structures. If it fits within your subconscious structures, then you can have it effortlessly. If not, then you cannot, and have to generate the energy to change those structures.
Secondly, a circle is a real-world useful technique. Sometimes you can’t contain all the energy yourself. I can contain quite a bit of energy because I’ve been working with it for nearly two decades. But there are still times a circle is useful.
A circle is essentially a container of energy. It’s also a way of setting aside sacred space so that nothing else influences your manifestation.
The other things are based on magical principles, as I said in the post. You use what works for you.
Brandon, I think your post on circles (whenever it comes up) is going to be useful. But could you just briefly describe what it feels like when you are barely containing energy anymore, and also what it feels like when the energy actually starts to dissipate because you can’t contain it anymore?
i Z,
There’s never quite a feeling that you can’t contain it, only that you can’t get as much energy as you’d like.
When it starts to dissipate, it just feels like it is slipping away from you. You can’t quite get a complete grasp on it. That’s the best way I can explain it.
I hope that makes sense.
There’s also just a different feel of the energy in a circle, especially if you invoke the elements, guardians, gods, etc. It feels alien to yourself, not just part of your own flow. And it’s more potent.

I have been doing my spell in cycles I believe. I use candles to do them. I trust that once my energy is released that the universe is handling the rest of the work, however, I don’t know what’s a good sign to follow by. I’ve read different perspectives of candle flame meanings but I’m still confused at times. But nonetheless, I have let go and feel good about letting go without becoming completely detached. I have also created a visualization that I try to read each day out loud. I just hope that I’m not subconsciously sabotaging the spell but I also don’t know what to look for to know if I’m doing that as well. Does the universe provide signs that a spell is working?
Hi Jasmine,
Thanks for your comment.
Just try to do your spell without any doubt. It sounds like you are doubting a bit. Do the spell every once in a while, then do your visualization once or twice a day after that.
Signs will come. Only you can know what they will be. They will be personally meaningful for you. At first, it might just be a better feeling about your goal. Eventually you’ll see external signs as well.

Mr. Brandon 😛 , this morning while running, I applied these principles to a goal of mine. Running in the morning and listening to upbeat music makes it so easy for me to raise energy, and also to direct it. Of course, I let it go afterwards. I just want to ask you if you think that this is expected to work. In other words, do you think that casting a spell while running and listening to music is effective? Or do I need to be sitting down, with my body relaxed?
Hi Z,
Oh, that can definitely work. It sounds like it’d help you to raise a good bit of energy.
Keep in mind that a lot of people who have done this kind of thing have used things like dancing, etc. They don’t just sit there. 🙂 So running is definitely something that can help you to raise energy, if it works for you.
Great! Thank you 🙂

Thanks for the post, Brandon. 🙂 I like the explanation of magic and how spells work. I was interested in magic years ago in my late teens and then heard about the Law of Attraction later. Like you say, it is a form of magic.
I read a post recently which said that there’s a difference between a Book of Shadows and a grimoire. (I didn’t know this). The witch who wrote it said that a BOS is a personal book of magic (where you write down your spells and results) whereas a grimoire is less personal and is a record of magical research. I suppose people have different definitions depending on their tradition/s. I’ve got a Book of Shadows myself. 🙂
I think the difference is more academic and theoretical more than anything. As far as I know, “book of shadows” is specifically a Wiccan invention. Grimoire has pretty much always been the term. But each can call it whatever they like. 🙂
Thanks for your reply, Brandon. Yeah, I expect it does depend on the particular traditions people follow. 🙂

Hi Brandon, this is very interesting. FYI – I like the Wiccan style where you charge by raising energy and of course directing and releasing. I like using crystals – Selenite helps to cleanse the space and of course palo santo but all of this boil down to our intentions right? and our will. But using stones and other ceremonial stuff is kinda more fun. I have not done any actual spells in a long time – thanks for reminding me how fun it is.
Based on my limited knowledge, may I share that using kyanite blades in the four corners of your room or altar / work place will help protect and kinda casts a bubble around you for protection. All one has to do is to set the intention for protection into the kyanite blades. Kyanite blades are said to be representative of Archangel Michael’s wings. Archangel Michael represents protection as you may know. Anyhow, hope you find my info interesting. I learnt this from a Reiki Master Teacher. Jas XO
