Are you a creator, or are you an attractor? Is there really a difference? What is the process at work when we create our own reality?
This is a question I’ve gotten a lot recently. Is the law of attraction purely a passive process, or is it more of a magical, active one?
Obviously the common view is more of the law of attraction as a passive process. You feel good about your goal, and it just comes to you.
But, as it turns out, creation and attraction are really two ends of the same spectrum, and both play a role in the creation process.
I will be answering this question today. However, more detail will be added to this discussion in this Saturday’s podcast, so I recommend checking that out as well.
The Common View
The common view of how we create our own reality is one of attraction—thus the name, “law of attraction”. It’s not so much that we create what we want, as that we draw to us that which matches the vibration of what we hold within. So it is not creation, but attraction.
This sounds like a pretty reasonable view, and much of it is actually correct. However, it is missing an important element in the creation process.
Before I go into that, let me discuss the flaw in believing 100% in attraction.
First of all, it goes against millennia of magical tradition. In magic, it is not the emotions that create on their own, but the will that initiates the entire process, which I’ll discuss later. Your own inner state is a vital part of that process, but it is only one part of many. It is not believed that just feeling a certain way will cause every goal that is related to that feeling to come to you.
I’ve discussed before the danger of excessive positive thinking. This is related. Just because you think positively about something, it doesn’t mean that you are automatically going to draw that into your reality. There are other elements involved.
Why does it matter that this goes against magical tradition? It matters because magicians are well-known for thoroughly studying the act of creation through magic. Magic has been refined over the years to become as effective as possible.
Because of that, it seems wise that if we are going to study a principle of the law of attraction, we should compare it to equivalent concepts in magical traditions.
But the second reason that there’s a flaw in this belief in attraction-only is that it just doesn’t seem to apply in reality. As I’ve discussed before, you can feel good and yet not have everything you want. And if that is the case, which it seems to be, then we have to look for other elements that also play a role in this process.
We Are Creators
It seems self-evident that we create our own reality, not just attract what already exists out there. There are constantly new ideas being formed, new goals being achieved, new challenges being overcome.
That’s why “magic” is such a great word for what we’re doing. The law of attraction is really a misnomer, because it’s about so much more than attraction.
Magic is about creation. It is about starting with nothing, and creating something entirely new. It’s about having an idea of what is wanted, and through the application of will, bringing that idea into outer reality.
Yes, attraction is a part of it, but only a part. Where exactly attraction enters in, I will discuss later on.
But creation is a much more dynamic process than is implied by the word “attraction”.
Imagine for a moment the big bang. At the beginning, nothing existed. Well, an infinitely small singularity existed, at some point, and who knows what existed prior to that singularity.
However, the big bang did not just attract to itself the completed universe. It exploded. It expanded at a massive velocity. It created the universe from essentially nothing.
Once things began to settle, then what you might call “attraction” began. Large bodies formed. The gravitation of those bodies held other, smaller bodies in orbit. But, those stars and planets did not exist initially; they had to be created, and the big bang was the impetus that caused that to happen.
Similarly, we are creators. That is the power that we inherently possess. We can conceive of an idea which does not exist yet, either in our own life or even in the world at large, and we can bring that idea into physical existence. That is creation. It is forming something completely new.
3 Forces of Creation
I’ve written before about the 3 essential elements of creation, namely will, focus, and emotion. However, I’d like to bring these same elements together in a slightly new way, which will hopefully aid in greater understanding.
There are three things required to create fire: fuel, heat, and oxygen. If any of these elements are missing, then you don’t have fire.
I imagine the emotions to be like the fuel of a fire. The greater the intensity of the emotions, the more you add to the momentum of that manifestation.
But, fuel on its own cannot create fire. Similarly, emotions on their own cannot just “attract” the desired. You could have a massive stack of logs, all ready for a fire, but it will never light up unless you light them.
That spark, that initial heat which gets things going, is the will. This is the prime force of creation.
And finally, the focus is the oxygen that keeps it going. As you focus on your goal, you feed it more and more energy.
Focus we’ve already covered at great length in previous posts. I’d mostly like to discuss the relationship between will and emotions, because it is the same relationship as between creation and attraction.
Will: The Spark of Creation
I’ve been emphasizing a great deal the importance of the will in magic and the law of attraction. And there is good reason. It is often ignored, but yet it is one of the most important elements. Without the will, your manifestation just can’t get off the ground.
You’re always using your will. You will to get up in the morning. You will to eat breakfast. You will to do the work you need to do. Will is pretty easy to use when you are willing things that already exist.
The difficulty comes in when you are attempting to will that which does not yet exist. That takes a new level of courage.
There are two general categories for such acts, which you already know: that which you believe you can get easily, otherwise known as a current level goal; and that which you believe will take some work to achieve, or are not even sure of its feasibility, which is a next level goal. We of course also have ultimate level goals, but those are just another step up from next level goals, and the same ideas apply.
We’ll discuss current level goals later, because they are really just another stage of the manifestation process, as the goal becomes easier and more feasible.
Will is the most important in this first vital stage of the next level goal. The reason is that emotion just doesn’t have the energy to overcome resistance.
Imagine you’re creating a new painting. At first, it takes a great deal of vision. It doesn’t exist yet, and you have to know how to form your vision on the canvas. But as it gets closer and closer to your final vision, you are really just adding the final touches. The vision is nearly realized, and now you just have to shape it here and there to better match the desired end-result.
This first stage of forming the vision out of nothing is the creation stage. You take raw Universal Energy, and deliberately shape it into the image of what you want, despite the resistance that is present.
As said, emotion just isn’t enough here. You can feel good about the idea of something, but when you start thinking about bringing that thing into reality, the resistance will arise, and the emotions won’t have anything to sustain them in the face of that resistance.
It takes will to hold to the course and continuously return again and again to that vision. Without will, the emotions will be too fleeting.
It is in the creation stage that we generate new subconscious structures, which can aid us in achieving our goals. The generation of new subconscious structures is far from easy, so takes quite a bit of will to complete.
Imagine a balance scale. On one end is reality without your goal. On the other end is reality with your goal achieved. The creation stage helps you to shift that balance from reality without your goal, to reality with your goal. It makes your goal easier, and even probable. But this process takes the force of will to make this possible.
Someone might ask, “If I feel the emotion of abundance, won’t I have to receive abundance?” That is certainly what the law of attraction commonly teaches. And, it is true, to a certain extent.
You will receive abundance, within the limits of the abundance you can allow yourself. If your upper limit is, say, $50,000 a year, that’s the most you can attract to yourself purely through feeling abundant.
But now let’s say we feel abundant, and we deliberately will that we make $100,000 a year. It is through that act of will that we create something new, and it is only through that act of will that we can increase our standard of living and enter into the new reality we have envisioned. This is the secret to how we create our own reality.
Emotions: The Fuel of Your Manifestation
As I said, will, via the creation stage, tips that balance to a reality where the goal is much easier to achieve.
All throughout the process, emotions are important. They are the fuel to the manifestation. They make it inspiring. They give you a reason to want to achieve the goal.
They also smooth out the process. They allow you to receive as much of the goal as you can right now. Perhaps abundance only means $50,000 per year right now, but holding those emotions of abundance will ensure you maximize what you can receive. Plus, as that amount increases due to your will, and the generation of new subconscious structures, you can continue to maximize the amount you can receive at any given time.
See it like this: positive emotions will allow you to manifest the best reality you can within your current subconscious structures (i.e., a current level goal). If you want to alter those subconscious structures to allow for a new reality (i.e., a next level goal), then you’ll have to go back to the creation stage by using your will.
Emotions have a second job as well: they make it easier to generate those new subconscious structures. The subconscious mind responds to heightened emotions, and as such, anything you think about with intense emotion, you tell your subconscious mind that this is important.
They are a great tool. But, on their own, they cannot outright change your reality.
Their strength is the greatest in this final stage, when the goal seems easier and more within your reach. You could call this the attraction stage, since this is really when most of the popular law of attraction techniques apply. In The Art of Reality Creation, I called this the debugging stage.
Recall the metaphor I gave earlier of the artist painting the canvas. In the beginning, the painting is far from his vision, so it takes more work to bring that painting more into alignment with that vision. But eventually, it only requires a few finishing touches. He is essentially “debugging” the painting, though debugging might seem to be an odd word to use in that situation. He’s shaping it to be closer and closer to what he wants it to be.
That is the attraction stage. In the example of the universe I gave earlier, the attraction stage is when the star has formed and starts drawing planets into its orbit. But, it can’t do that until its gravitational pull is strong enough.
This stage takes very little work, just as most law of attraction teachers say. All the inner work is pretty much complete. Now it’s just a matter of allowing the completed manifestation to enter into our reality. Any work here would be counterproductive.
Do We Create or Do We Attract?
To bring this all together, as I said we are creators, and we are attractors of what we have created. The means by which we create our own reality is simple:
- Use the will to generate the necessary subconscious structures to support the desired reality
- Once those subconscious structures are in place (as evidenced by the goal feeling easier), use the emotions to attract that new reality
