Have you ever had a huge desire? The structural tension of this desire was so strong, that it took up just about all of your energy. You worked tirelessly to fulfill this desire, not because you needed it, but because you wanted it for its own sake.
It’s a journey. It’s not something you achieve in a day, or often even a week or a month. But, it’s all worth it once you achieve that goal.
If you’ve experienced this kind of thing before, then you know about the transformative power of your goals.
Your goals have an immense power to transform you from within. By the time you have reached your goal, you are not the same person as when you started.
But why is this, and what does it mean for you?
2 Types of Goals
There are essentially two types of goals:
- Current level goals: Goals that are easy for you
- Next level goals: Goals that require more alignment to achieve
Think about all the things in your life that come easily to you. These are your current level goals.
Your current income level is a current level goal, because that’s the level of abundance you’re primed for.
Other examples include a successful, healthy relationship, your level of health, your performance at your job, etc.
There are probably hundreds or thousands of current level goals. You just don’t notice them because they are, well, already at your level. They require no effort to maintain.
But the next level goals are the ones that we’re interested in here. They’re the fun ones, because they aren’t so easy to achieve.
Examples of next level goals might include increasing your income level, improving your relationship if you’re already in one, getting into a relationship if you’re not in one yet, improving your health, getting promoted at work, finding a new job, going on vacation and having to save for it, etc.
You can tell your next level goals very simply: ask yourself, “What do I now want, which feels a bit uncomfortable to me?”
Let’s say you want that dream job. You think of it, and it’s a bit uncomfortable, because you recognize you don’t have it yet. It’s a next level goal.
My monthly income goals for the past two months have been next level goals, because they were not comfortable for me. They took a bit of work to achieve.
Your current level goals almost never change. I say almost, because obviously things sometimes get worse. You are laid off at work. You break up with a long-term partner. Your health gets worse. These things obviously happen, even though they were current level goals. The reason they happen will be discussed in a future post.
But, it is your next level goals that take most of your focus.
Your most common or severe anxieties can point to your next level goals.
Imagine an all too common scenario: You’re living paycheck-to-paycheck. You have anxiety about how you’re going to buy food to eat, pay the electric bill, etc.
The implied next level goal here is that you no longer live paycheck-to-paycheck, you have plenty of money to buy groceries, pay the electric bill, etc. If that weren’t a next level goal, well, you wouldn’t be anxious about it.
Your Next Level Goals Should Feel Uncomfortable
Look, I know this is pretty unusual to hear. But, your next level goals are supposed to feel uncomfortable.
Why? You don’t have them yet. If they didn’t feel uncomfortable, it would mean either (1) you were sugar coating your current reality, or (2) trying to deny your true goals.
As I said on Monday, either one of those options will nullify your structural tension, and halt any forward momentum you may have been generating.
Most commonly, I see people trying to be okay with current reality, and not admitting that they want something else.
Please note this is different from making peace with what is, which is an essential part of the process. Making peace with current reality is simply saying to yourself, “This is where I am now, and that’s okay.”
But it’s not trying to make yourself be happy with where you are now, and stop wanting what you want. You don’t say, “This is where I am now, and I am happy with this.”
Obviously, you’re not. Your next level goal is pulling you forward to something new.
This is the first step you must take when a new desire is born within you. You must give it free rein to excite you, to terrify you, to pull Universal Energy through you through your emotional reaction to that desire.
If you say, “I don’t have my desire, but I’m happy with things as they are,” you’re lying to yourself, and not allowing your desire to pull you forward to the attainment of that goal.
As I said before, get comfortable with tension. Get comfortable with not knowing whether you’ll reach your desire. It’s more comfortable to try to resolve that tension, but that will sabotage your progress.
This is where transformation begins. You leave that question unanswered. You let the desire exist, and admit you are not there yet. There is more work to be done, first, and that’s okay. That’s more than okay: it’s the flow of life.
I mentioned in Tuesday’s Spiritual Freedom Support Call that my current monthly goal is terrifying. It’s well above what I have aimed for in previous months.
And I’ll admit, I quite nearly lowered my goal, especially when I realized that practically speaking, it’d be a lot harder than I anticipated.
But, it didn’t feel right to lower that goal. It felt like compromising. It felt like giving up on what I wanted.
So, with a decent amount of trepidation, I kept the goal, and continued to work towards it.
Already, things have moved in huge ways to bring me closer. I’m not quite so terrified, but there’s still a bit to go, too.
That’s the tension. That’s the nature of a next level goal. It’s going to be a bit uncomfortable. It might even be very uncomfortable. The amount of discomfort you can handle is up to you, and you alone. I did this month’s goal as a bit of a challenge to myself. You might prefer only to deal with slight discomfort. But, the nature of next level goals is that there will be discomfort.
Goals Require Something of Us
In a similar vein, it’s important to note that your goals will require something of you.
What does that mean? Simply that you will not be left untouched by your goal. It will change you.
Again, your current level goals are the goals you are already a match to. They require nothing from you. You set an intention and they come rather easily.
I’ve said before that I will often intend to receive money, and will receive it the same day. Usually it’s in the amount of $20-$40. That is an easy amount for me. It’s a current level goal. It requires nothing from me: I just set the intention and it happens.
But, a next level goal is, well, at another level altogether.
The moment you rest your focus upon such a goal, it will pull energy through you. It will immediately show you the discrepancy between where you are, and where you want to be. It’ll feel uncomfortable.
But, the more you focus on it, the more you meditate on it, the more you use your preferred techniques on it, the more you change.
Yes, you change. Outer reality is a mirror. You must become the person who is a match to that goal, before the goal will come.
So, the goal requires you to embody it. It requires you to take on the essence of that goal.
You’ve heard that before, I know. But it’s more radical than perhaps first seems apparent.
You don’t just take on the essence for a few moments, though that’s how it begins. You become the essence of that goal within yourself.
It’s often indiscernible for you, but it’s true.
My October goal now seems small. Even my November goal has already been exceeded this month.
Why? Because I became the essence of those goals, and then I moved on. My current goal is changing me to become the essence of that goal, too, and so previous goals seem inconsequential.
But they weren’t at the time. I had to go through the same transformation process for each of those goals.
Think back to something you’ve accomplished in the past, which at the time seemed impossible, but now seems effortless.
That’s this principle in action. The goal transformed you to become a person who could easily achieve that goal. You took on its essence within yourself, and became resonant with that vibration.
Vibration doesn’t just change overnight. Yes, we talk about “raising your vibration” in the moment, to focus on something more positive. But your overall vibration, or you could say your essence, changes over time.
And the key to change is tension and release. It’s holding the vision of your goal, letting the tension be there, then allowing yourself to be changed to become aligned with that goal.
It’s not skipping about in a blissful state all day. There may be moments of that, but allow the process to be as uncomfortable as it is. Neither force it to be positive nor negative. Let the energy move where it naturally will, as led by the structural tension you put in place.
How to Allow Yourself to Be Transformed by Your Goals
So you have a next level goal. You accept the discomfort of holding that goal, because you realize that it must transform you, before you can have it.
But, how do you allow it to transform you?
Transformation is about change. It’s about keeping some parts, and stripping away others.
When you focus on your goal, it immediately forms tension, because your subconscious mind knows that you just don’t have this yet, and frankly aren’t even close to it.
When this happens, you have a choice:
- Drop your goal and follow your current path, or
- Choose the goal, allowing it to change you
Transformation is about a series of choices. Those choices take the form of either focusing on what you currently hold to be true in your subconscious mind, or focusing on the essence of your goal.
If you choose the path that your subconscious mind presents, you will get more of the same as you have been getting, both good and bad. It’s a familiar path, which makes it comforting.
If you choose the path your goal presents, then you align yourself a bit more with that goal.
Every time you choose the path of your goal, your subconscious mind learns that this path is more important. Every time you choose the path of your subconscious beliefs, your subconscious mind learns that your current beliefs are more important.
The law of attraction is about choices. It’s about choosing between current reality, or the vision of a new reality you hold in mind. Your choices solidify whichever path you choose. It makes that path more real—more reflected within outer reality.
That’s why I don’t accept the idea that you can simply focus on something that makes you feel good, even if it’s totally unrelated to your goal, and you’ll still manifest the goal itself. Maybe it helps you to feel better overall, but it doesn’t help you to be any more aligned with the goal than you were before. Only the moment-by-moment deliberate choosing of your goal can do that.
Feeling better can do one thing, and one thing only: it can make it easier to receive your current level goals. We all know we can set a simple intention, and it’ll come quickly, if we don’t obsess.
But your next level goals require transformation from within, which occurs when you are faced with the choice between who you are now, and who you will be when you have this goal.
So how are you transformed by your goals?
Simply by focusing on them, and choosing them repeatedly as your subconscious mind objects to your choice.
Just like any relationship, your goal will naturally change you as you focus on it. That’s why I always recommend meditating on your goal daily. Journal about it. Visualize it. Bask in the having of that goal.
By increasing your contact with your goal, you naturally become more and more in alignment with it.
That doesn’t mean to obsess and to think about it all day. Just a few times is more than enough, as far as manifestation techniques are concerned.
But, that is more than enough.
Then, throughout the rest of the day, your subconscious mind will make its opinion known: it’s not a fan.
But, you keep choosing the goal, and with each choice, your subconscious mind is more and more on board.
Your old, limiting beliefs simply fall away as you choose not to react to them. New beliefs are formed as you focus on the type of person you will be when you have your goal.
And then as you change within, circumstances start to change without, too. Your goal, having taken root within yourself, will now sprout into your everyday life. Through your deliberate choice of the goal, over and over again, you have made it reality.
That’s what it’s like to be transformed by your goals.
