Recently I discussed two approaches to the law of attraction: the passive, Zen approach, also called the Hermit path; and the active, magical approach, also called the Magus path.
The Magus path, as I mentioned, relies heavily on confidence.
But, how do you build this confidence? It’s somewhat of a catch-22: manifestations only come easily when you have confidence, but you can only have confidence once manifestations start coming more easily. What is one to do?
Well, as it turns out, there are many ways of building confidence, which I’ll be discussing in this post.
Perfect Confidence Isn’t Needed
First of all, I want to point out that you don’t need perfect confidence in order to walk the Magus path. In fact, if you already had perfect confidence in your goal, you would already have it.
In order to understand this, allow me to explain a hopefully simple concept.
You have a desire. That means you don’t have it yet. If you had it, it would no longer be a desire. You’d be enjoying the actuality of that experience.
As has been pointed out by some of you in the past, desire has built into it a sense of lack. Desire means “I don’t have this yet.”
Of course, that doesn’t mean you need to focus on the lack which this desire represents.
Manifestation is, in essence, the process of bridging the gap between where you are now, to where you’d like to be.
But, the bigger that gap, the harder it is to cross, and generally the stronger that desire is.
Imagine you want to cross a river. In order to get across, you need a bridge. The wider the river, the longer the bridge you’ll need.
The river is that gap. The width of the river is how big your desire is, and how far away you are from attaining it. The bridge is your manifestation work, which gets you across one step at a time.
If you had perfect confidence, the river would be so narrow that you could just step across. And, some desires might be like that, but they aren’t generally the very fun ones.
The bigger the desire—the wider that river—the more fun it is to bridge that gap, because it’s not just a given. You have to face your own resistance in order to build that bridge and walk across.
So, it’s not about having perfect confidence today. It’s about building up that confidence a little at a time, which helps you to build that bridge to your desire.
If you have a big desire, you’re not going to believe in it 100% today. Some people will beat themselves up because they aren’t a match to their desire on day 1. But as I’ve said, you have to have the persistence to follow your desire to the end.
So the question is not, “How can I build up perfect confidence in this goal?” The question is, “How can I have a bit more confidence than I did a moment ago?”
You’re not expected to cross that river with one step. You’re just expected to build your bridge across one plank at a time.
Focus on Your Progress
This is a pretty simple one, but incredibly important.
We have the tendency to focus on how far we have to go to reach our goal. Of course, the more you focus on how far you have to go, the more of that gap you’ll manifest.
I’ve started several businesses since I was 16 years old. In each of them, I noticed that the first customer was the hardest to get. After the first customer, it seemed like the floodgates were opened and customer-after-customer would come.
This is before I knew about the law of attraction, but now this makes sense. Before the first customer, I didn’t have a good sense of the vibration of “getting customers”. But once I got the first one, I was so excited about that, that it was a trivial matter to get a second, and a third, and so on.
But if I had instead looked at that first customer and thought to myself, “Wow, only one customer! Look how far I have to go!” I would have stagnated right there. My progress would have halted.
Why? Because I’d be focusing not on my accomplishments, but on my deficits.
This is the wisdom behind looking for the evidence of your manifestation. And, sometimes you have to get pretty creative in order to invent some evidence, but that is okay. Whatever you have to do to convince yourself that things are getting better, that will help you to move in the right direction.
Reduce the Fear of Failure
Pain is a bigger motivator than pleasure, so this can be a difficult one. We try a lot harder to avoid pain, than we do to maximize pleasure.
This is our reptile brain taking control.
What is the reptile brain? It is the oldest layer of your brain—the part that only knows about survival and mating. It tends to put everything in terms of pleasure or pain.
Pain, though, is a bigger motivator, because it is more immediate. If you’re being threatened by a mountain lion, well, that threat can’t wait. It needs your immediate attention.
If, however, you’re hunting down an animal for dinner, another animal can always come along later if you lose this one. So, more attention is given to the threat than it is to the hope of pleasure in the future.
But, in order to be successful, you really have to turn this on its head, and make pleasure the dominant motivator. The focus on pleasure will bring more pleasure, and so you’ll find yourself in an upward cycle.
The best way to do this is to convince your reptile brain that there is really nothing to be afraid of. I teach some great ways of doing this in The Art of Reality Creation. However, I’ll give some basic suggestions below.
If a fear is real and practical, then the best step is honestly to take action to remove that fear to the best of your ability. If you were fired, your fear is going to be a lot less if you have six months of savings, vs. if you have no savings at all.
However, if the fear is imaginary, or else is real but there’s nothing you can do about it, then you need to take another approach.
One useful option is to reframe your fears. Reframing means to see something in a new context.
For instance, did you get fired because life is unfair and things never work out for you? Or, was it because the Universe has something better in store?
A good reframe will immediately remove the fear, and help you to see things in a better light.
Another good approach is to use mindfulness. Fear is nothing more than your mind believing in the thoughts that are arising. These thoughts are almost always false. Mindfulness will help you to see the thoughts for what they are: mere distractions and illusions.
Without the magnetic power of your fearful thoughts, you will enter the zero state, where you have infinite power to create your desire.
Even just a few seconds in the zero state will weaken your fearful thoughts, and they will have that much less of a hold over you.
Once you weaken your fearful thoughts, then you can put your focus on pleasurable aspects of your reality, and your reptile brain won’t fight you anymore. In fact, it will give you even more reasons to focus on pleasure, because it was programmed to do exactly this, provided there are no immediate threats.
Trust in the Gods
One of my favorite ways recently of building confidence is simply to have trust in the gods.
I can’t express how much I’ve gained through my relationship with my personal gods. They’ve been there for me when I’ve needed them the most, and even when I just want to reach out and connect.
For you, it might be the ascended masters, angels, your spirit guides, higher self, or even just the Universe. Your depiction of Divinity is personal to you, of course.
However, having trust in that Divinity is one of the most important aspects of magic, or the law of attraction. If you know that the gods are doing their utmost to bring you your desire, despite all your resistance, then it is a lot easier to let go and simply have confidence that your goal is coming. Which, incidentally, will help along the process of actually manifesting that goal.
Recently I was working on manifesting money for a specific purpose. I allowed myself to get a little nervous about it, and kept praying to my gods about how much I wanted this to happen.
Eventually I knew I just had to let go, and they would work out all the details.
It turned out that the money came by totally unexpected means. What we actually received was several times more than I had been expecting, and so I had the amount I needed.
I started laughing right about then, because I knew that the gods knew all along that this would happen, and my worrying was for nothing. They had worked out all the details, and I never suspected it.
When you see the Universe work things out again and again and again, you tend to lose your ability to worry so much. You just start to realize that no matter what, everything will work out in the end. That’s the best attitude you could possibly have.
I’ve mentioned this already in the past, but rituals can really help to grow confidence. They help to impress the goal upon your subconscious, so it just seems more real to you.
As I’ve said before, these rituals don’t have to be anything fancy. There are simple rituals you can do every day to increase your confidence.
The commenter who prompted this post specifically mentioned that rituals didn’t help her to gain confidence. Or, they did in a way, but it felt like a fake sort of confidence.
I think this can happen if you are trying to bridge too large a gap with the ritual.
Rituals can do a lot, but there may still be resistance that comes up to the surface, and you have to know how to deal with that appropriately.
It may also be that you performed a ritual you really didn’t believe in, or which wasn’t significant to your own subconscious mind. If you just go through the motions, but really don’t believe in what you’re doing, then it’s probably not going to work for you.
You have to realize that belief is easily 99% of magic. Without belief, magic simply can’t work. If you believe that these are meaningless actions, then they aren’t going to do anything.
On the other hand, if you believe that three jumping jacks a day will bring you abundance, then, well, they will. 😛
It’s better to create your own ritual that works with you and your beliefs, than to try to follow one someone else has created, which doesn’t really resonate with you. Even if yours is very simple, it’ll work far better than a complicated one that just doesn’t feel right to you.
That being said, I’d also pay attention to when you perform your ritual. It can still work when done at an unfavorable time, but favorable conditions can really boost your results.
For instance, now we are in the dark time of the Moon, which is the three days prior to the new moon. It’s really not a great time for magic, and I’d hold off until next Tuesday (November 29) once the new cycle begins, before doing any major manifesting.
If you are focusing on your goal daily, as you should be, then still keep doing that, but just don’t expect any major results around this time. That doesn’t mean that it can’t happen, just that it’s much less likely to.
But, if you perform a ritual that has significance to you, and it lines up well with the flow of Universal Energy at that time, then it can definitely help to increase your confidence and to boost your magical results.
