The biggest issue I see among those who use the law of attraction is a lack of faith and trust. They become concerned that the Universe isn’t going to come through for them, and so the ego feels the need to take control itself, which never works.
I mentioned this a bit in Monday’s post. In that post, I said that it is vitally important that you foster a connection with the Divine.
Well, this is the post where I go into much greater detail about that very process.
Why You Need a Divine Connection
It seems to me that in many law of attraction circles, we often strip the LOA of any sign of spirituality.
By that, I mean that while there is definitely talk of the Universe and its role in manifestation, it is more or less seen as a step in the process. Do your part, and the Universe will always oblige. Do X, and the Universe will do Y.
I myself have striven to the best of my ability to make this a predictable process. I wanted to get to the point where if you did the right steps, you would get the results you wanted from the Universe.
And this is still valid, in part. But it is missing an important element:
It strips the life from the process. It strips the spirit—the essence—the magic.
We walk this fine line in the law of attraction between materialism and spirituality. These principles will certainly bring you your desires. And when people hear this, they often think, “Great, if I get my desire, then I’ll be happy, and I won’t need anything else.”
And of course we say over and over that you have to be happy even without the desire, but let’s be honest, most people overlook that part of these teachings. 😛
The truth is, most people have no idea how to be happy without their desire. And yet, it is the most important part of not only using the law of attraction, but living as a co-creator.
We all wish we could just snap our fingers and have our desire instantly, but, that’s not the case. And the reason that’s not the case is because it takes the willingness to be happy without that desire, before it can come to us.
Now, the question is, when you reduce the Universe down to a series of processes and cause-and-effect responses, how exactly do you learn to be happy without your desire? There’s just nothing to put your trust in. Yes, you have the form, but not the essence.
But when you start to go deeper and encounter the true essence of the Universe, then you have something to build upon. The Universe starts to be not only the procurer of your things, but the supplier of happiness, the mystery of life, the support of your purpose for being here.
I’ve said before, out of fullness comes external manifestations. It can’t come out of want, out of need, out of lack. It has to come from the consciousness that things are okay with or without those desires.
The Importance of Myth and Magic
We live in a very science-based society today. There was a time that the Sun was a cosmic force, but today it is simply a ball of gas that will one day collapse into a black hole.
It sets up a false dichotomy of sorts, between the spiritual and the physical. If the Sun is a ball of gas, it is not also, say, Apollo driving his chariot through the sky. That was only believed by primitive people, but now we are too knowledgeable for those ancient myths.
But, those myths gave life to the world around us. They infused everyday life with a sense of magic and purpose.
We still have myth today, but it has just been relegated to areas of life where it is acceptable. Think of your favorite movies or books. These media include different motifs that have a lot in common with traditional myth. But, as soon as you leave the movie theater, or close the book, myth becomes wishful or fanciful thinking.
To these ancient cultures, every part of nature had some meaning and purpose. The full Moon didn’t just mean the Moon was fully illuminated, no more important than any other random event. It was a time of magic and mystery. The waxing and waning of the Moon had their own significance, as did the new Moon. They were all part of a cycle, which affected us as human beings as well.
Is the Moon a big rock? Of course, it is. But that’s just its physical representation. Mythically, or spiritually, it is much more than that. This mythic, magical essence is what ancient peoples tapped into through their beliefs, customs, and rituals.
Is spring just the time when days start to get longer again, the weather warmer, and plants begin to grow? Yes, of course. But, mythically, it represents so much more, which is why most cultures celebrated the Spring Equinox. It is new life, fertility, hope, and more.
In modern society, we tend to be separated from the cycles. We give little attention to the Moon, and only mark the passing of the seasons by the changing weather. But to these cultures, the cycles were everything. They not only reflected changes in the physical environment, but also changes in the realm of spirit.
Daily life was marked by offerings to various deities, for success, health, and happiness. These deities were not far off and remote, but part of the world around us. They had stories told and retold about them, which demonstrated their nature, as well as important morals about life.
Living Magically
But, so what? What’s the importance of all this?
For most who practice the law of attraction, of course we are far from pure materialists. We believe in a spiritual realm that operates under certain principles. But, we are also far removed from the connectedness to the world that I’ve discussed above. We’ve removed the context to life.
For example, let’s say your desire is for a relationship. You visualize and affirm that relationship daily, and do your best to have faith that it is coming.
But in what do you have your faith and trust?
If you have trouble being happy without that relationship, how do you overcome that obstacle? You hear that you must be happy without your desire, but perhaps don’t have the slightest idea how to do that.
So the question is, how do you see your day-to-day life? Do you see it as simply a response to your vibration? Do you see it as resistance to overcome so you can have your desire?
All that is true, but it’s also much more.
What if your life is not just about getting your desire, but is an expression of the Divine, to you, to bring you into greater connectedness with All That is.
Do you see and acknowledge the little gifts given to you every day? The beautiful scenery you witness, the sounds of birds chirping, the smile of another, a kind word from a friend, etc?
Do you acknowledge your place in the Universe? Some will say that as creators, we are the center of the Universe, but it’s not true. We are part of a greater tapestry of life, in which we play a part. And, we act as co-creators to bring about the best result possible.
Your life moves in rhythm with the cycles of nature: the Moon in its monthly transit, the annual cycle of the seasons, the subtle influence of the planets, and many others. To outright ignore these influences is to decontextualize your life. You exist within a living, breathing, universal web of spirit and magic.
“So, can I get my desire?” you might ask. But, that’s the whole problem. It’s not all about your desire. (I know, shock and horror! ????) As long as you keep thinking of getting your desire, you’re missing the larger point.
And that larger point is that you are part of something bigger. Life flows within and around you. You are part of that flow, but not the totality of the flow. The Universe is here to support you, but only if you allow yourself to be supported.
Yes, if you trust, and let go of the necessity for the desire, then you will likely get it. But it’s not a formula. You can’t solve for X. As long as you are trying to plug in this or that technique to “force” the Universe to give you what you want, well, you just can’t get it.
It’s a partnership. It’s a co-creation. It’s about give and take. Yes, you can influence the reality around you, in quite shocking ways once you get good at it. But, there are measures in place to protect the integrity of the system. That is, it requires spiritual development before you can really have reliable success.
There’s no secret key. There’s no way of forcing the Universe to do anything. There’s just working with the flow as it is.
But, people have been doing LOA much longer than it has been called LOA. Magicians and witches of old knew the nature of this delicate balance, and how to best use it. They knew how to make it far more likely to get the results they wanted, but they also knew that there were no guarantees. They made their Divine connection more important than the particular desires they wanted to achieve.
Establishing Your Divine Connection
It’s really your choice how you want to proceed. You can continue to wish for that one desire, and hope it will be the key to your happiness (hint: it won’t). You can try to read book after book, looking for that one technique to make the law of attraction work for you (hint: you won’t find it).
Or, you can invite the Universe to show you the proper way of things. You can open up to the Divine connection which has always been present within you. You can recognize the larger tapestry in which you live.
So, here on out I’m going to assume that you want to establish that Divine connection. How do you do it?
Well, as I mentioned on Monday, I would start by inviting the Universe to show itself to you in some way. You’d be surprised the magic you can witness in your life when you start to allow.
Perhaps drop your desire for a while, and take some time just to become acquainted with the Divine. Dropping your desire isn’t a necessary step, but it could help you to be less distracted while doing this process.
Second, start doing some sort of spiritual practice every day. This could be meditation, prayer, offerings to deities of your choice, or simply being in nature. There’s no right or wrong here: whatever helps you to feel more connected is right for you. The more you intentionally connect with the Divine, the more it will unfold for you.
That’s the minimum. The following are mere suggestions that you might try or not, according to your preference.
First, pay more attention to the cycles. We just had a full Moon last weekend, and the Moon is now waning. Make a simple intention for the things you’d also like to wane from your life—in other words, the things you’d like to get rid of. Less resistance, less debt, less of a bad habit, less of a certain relationship, etc. While you can do this sort of intention at any time, the natural cycle of the waning Moon will lend strength to your intention.
The days are getting shorter. In Pagan cultures, this was a time of harvest and of self-reflection. Reflect on your accomplishments this year, wrap up projects that are ready to be ended, etc.
In a few weeks is Halloween. In just about every culture, this was recognize as the time when the veil between the physical and the spiritual was thinnest. If you have any natural psychic abilities, it’s a good time to work on developing those.
This is what I mean by cycles. You use the natural cycles to support your own desires. Everything has a time and a place.
Second, set up a sacred space in your house that you can visit daily. This fits well with my suggestion above to do some spiritual practice every day. In that sacred space, you can set up an altar or shrine, with symbols that are important to you. Some people feel drawn to particular deities, and might have symbols or statues of those deities. Some prefer angels, and might have representations of those angels. There’s no right or wrong.
This one might seem far out there, but giving a name and a face to “the Universe” can help. In Wicca, they will choose at least one male (god) figure, and one female (goddess) figure, from the pantheon of their choice. The idea is that the Universe is dualistic in nature, existing between masculine and feminine, light and dark, warm and cold, etc. It’s a matter of balance.
My chosen goddess is the Greek goddess Hecate. I’ve had a connection to her since I was a child. She represents magic, which is obviously important to me.
My chosen god is Hades (I know, pretty dark). He helps me to explore the shadow side, and the necessity of embracing both light and dark.
But with these gods and goddesses, they’re not just ideas to me. They have personalities. They have a specific energy that identifies them. Mythology is mythical, sure, but it has an aspect of reality to it. It’s a bit complex for this post, but perhaps I can expand on this in a future post.
Again the above are just suggestions. Feel free to do as much or little as you want. But, hopefully this gives you some ideas of how to bring more math and magic into your own life.
How About You?
Now it’s your turn. How will you deepen your own connection with the Divine? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Now you’re talking about the stuff I’d like to hear! Yes, there is evidence of what you mention in the post. The first currency had mythical creatures on it. I think I’ve mentioned this before but it is worth repeating. Also, I saw a youtube video where someone who claims he is a Divine interpreter of sorts and Self-realized, was explaining that the sun’s rays hit the earth and energy in exchanged and that is how the two communicate. He can see this with his intuition. Of course, we all have this ability but it is beaten out of us.
“What if your life is not just about getting your desire, but is an expression of the Divine, to you, to bring you into greater connectedness with All That is”. I’ve realized that every desire is a spiritual journey. The people you meet along the way, the experiences you have. It is not just about getting to where you want to be, contrary to popular belief. The U knows what you need and will bring you those experiences in the process. For example, if you want more friends while in school, then a study abroad will be perfect to see a new place, meet new people while getting credit and expanding your social circle and even dating at that place! If this just comes to you, then that is a sign you should take it.
I think this is why people do not pursue what they want. They think it is something that is isn’t. With one failure they give up and close shop and settle into something they think is safe but do not want and that is where some suffering begins. In his Spiritual Laws of Success, Ananda mentions first and foremost is the Connection to Spirit and this should be the center of our life. Also, he says that we need to be willing to do what is necessary to get to where we want to be. If we are not, then we really do not want it. Life also shows you, but you need to take the cues. Also, there are a bunch of spiritual things mentioned to the path of success, so yes, it is not just about the goal itself. For example, pursuing your goal in joy and not hearing the violins in the background playing pity music is the way to go. Being easy on yourself (I need to practice this one) and taking breaks and resting are also necessary. I just think society makes it so that we need to be at certain checkpoints in our life and if we aren’t then we have a problem, but I do not think this is true, as we are all on different paths! Also, everything responds to kindness and a good vibe, despite society’s false belief in austere measures and fear consciousness. You put forth the vibe. I do not know how bad people get ahead, but that is for another time.
Hi Kat,
Great comment. Thank you. And I’m glad that you appreciate this topic. As I said in the call, I was a bit nervous about coming out with this so soon. But, the reaction has been great so far. 🙂
I love it. Yes. 😀 That is so true.
And yes, I agree it takes persistence. You have to go for what you want, no matter what. But at the same time, keep the spiritual connection central, as you said. It’s a fine balance.
How do “bad” people get ahead? A few things: there are people who are a match to being victimized, unfortunately. And, those “bad” people have subconscious programs that support their success in certain areas of life. But negative energy will beget negative energy, and it’ll come back to them. It likely already is, behind the scenes.
Ah yes, this makes sense. My friend mentioned that those who do bad things to others- their children suffer a lot or lose their mind or something. I see this in many cases around me, and then they wonder what is going wrong with them. I dare not explain it, but I’m like, hey, have you looked in the mirror lately, dude ?
Anyway, there are instances, of course, where this is not the case, but yes, I have intuitively seen the former.
Important post Brandon, the importance of the spiritual side in LOA needs emphasising. I’m reading Richard Dott’s book Light Touch Manifestations at the minute. Shouldn’t take long as it’s only short like his other books, but unlike his other books it puts forward an actual methodology for getting in the right spiritual/emotional frame of ‘mind’ in which to set intentions etc. And says that unless that frame of mind can be achieved, manifestation as such will be very hard. It does seem to be a case of ‘Get your soul right’ 😉
Hi Jon,
Thanks for your comment.
Yes I think it is very important. 🙂 It is unfortunately not touched upon as often as it should be, but it is essential.
That book is a good one. I think you will enjoy it. 🙂

For the past few days, I’ve been letting go of desiring to be loved, accepted and appreciated, and I’ve been appreciating people for the love and kindness they radiate, as well as loving myself, and appreciating all the little small or big events that made me smile. It’s such a beautiful feeling. It feels like it’s infinite in depth, and it has no pain infused, unlike the “egoistic loving and craving”. It’s that love and peace that I experienced before. Yeah, this is life. Of course, there are events and things that challenge this, but I see that I’m really getting the hang of it. Everything else definitely fades in comparison with this.
Hey, that’s great, Z! I’m very happy for you that you’re figuring it out. 🙂
Yes, once you find it, everything else pales in comparison. It’ll just deepen for you now, which will get even better. 🙂
Aaaand of course, a wave of bad experiences and emotions started raping me again, and once again I feel tired of life and hopeless. lol
It makes me wonder, if we already suffer when building resistance and carrying it around, why do we also have to suffer while allowing it? Getting it in is painful, allowing it is painful as well. One would expect that if getting it in was painful, then allowing it to flow out would be relieving. Yet, it’s not, at least not for me. When I allow, bad things just start piling up and up and up, until I can’t take it anymore. It’s like an experiment by the Universe to see how much I can take before I crumble.
I know I’m repeating myself again, and I’m sorry, but this is the only place in the world where I can vent myself. How I wish all this were easier. It’s not fair that the love and peace I find can’t last. It feels like Newton’s law of action and reaction. The higher I go up, the lower I will fall. That is, the more love and peace I feel, the more and harder resistance will hit me, until it breaks me. You know, it really does feel like an endless hell. Every single time I got up, I got pinned down hard. The longer I tried my best to stand, the harder the events were in my reality.
Seriously, people around me that complain all the time and are pessimistic, have life and friends. It’s ironic how all the knowledge of LOA and mindfullness and releasing practically hasn’t allowed me to finally life the way I want to.
You said that LOA is a law of the Universe, so it can only mirror to me what I have inside. Well I must have an endless pool of resistance in me then, since it never gets even close to being drained.
Another thought I’m having is if I should have just started drinking alcohol like others, years ago. It seems to be cure for everything, and everyone drinking it has a life, unlike me. I haven’t found anyone who hasn’t drunk it, that is happy. Maybe I can’t become free of resistance in this life? Maybe I have to die, get refreshed and maybe then I’ll stand a chance. I feel so energetically drained, and so I don’t have energy to put up with all this shit anymore.
Hi Z,
Now’s the time to apply the principles I gave in this post. So, what’s your spiritual practice? What is the Divine, to you?
I suspect that you are focusing on your resistance, instead of allowing it. Allowing it should indeed feel like relief, at least eventually. It feels like a weight off your shoulders.
But if you are just focusing on how much resistance is here, then obviously that will grow.
The Universe is indeed mirroring to you what you are holding. You are holding on to the idea that life is unfair and there is no way out. And, that’s what it is giving to you in return. But try out what I said in this post, and see what happens.
*raises hand* I don’t even touch alcohol. I can’t bear the taste of the stuff. And, I’m happy. 🙂
Well during the past several days I could see some small coincidences that make sense to me, and I enjoyed the beauty of the nature, people and even traffic. If I could stay in that love and peace, I feel that I could probably be happy even without desires manifesting.
However, I can’t keep that state, and once again, life is awful, so screw that. Today my body was awfully tired in the morning, so I didn’t go out for a run. I also didn’t feel motivated for it. I mean, what the hell with that? I don’t blame my body, it does its best, and I appreciate it, but why don’t I wake up feeling fired up for running, and then I connect with the Divine again? Why am I stripped of this? It doesn’t have to be running every morning, but seriously today I couldn’t connect with the Divine for more than a few minutes. As soon as I managed to, some small event pissed me off. I allowed it, and got connected again, and then again something happened that pissed me off. It’s like the Universe is telling me, “hey sorry buddy no more connection for you so soon, please wait for a few more days.”
When I’m connected with the Divine, I don’t care that I don’t yet have people to hang out with, that I don’t have a robust, good-looking body, that I have to study, etc. None of these matter then, everything feels perfect. But hey, I get kicked out of that state of love and peace, and then the only thing left is feeling awful, tired and being reminded how I don’t even have physical manifestations I’d like to. I mean, I’d rather be in that state, but the Universe or whatever won’t let me.
Hi Z,
You treat connection with the Divine as an all-or-nothing prospect. When you’re frustrated, why can’t you say something like, “Hey, Divine/Universe/Gods/whatever, this event really made me mad. But I’m going to give these emotions over to you.” I find that’s really helpful. It’s not just something to do when you’re feeling perfect and aligned. How often are any of us really like that? It’s meant for everyday life, no matter where you are.
Do you think I’ll ever manage to finally have a happy life, in this lifetime, considering how unsuccessful I’ve been with this so far? Maybe it’s a stupid question, seriously I can’t objectively see if there’s any hope for me, because look how often I complain about my life.
Yes, of course, if you choose to. It’s a process, but I believe anyone can do it.
Important post Brandon, the importance of the spiritual side in LOA needs emphasising. I’m reading Richard Dott’s book Light Touch Manifestations at the minute. Hi Z,
You treat connection with the Divine as an all-or-nothing prospect.
Hi Brandon, I enjoyed this post. 🙂 I’ve been interested in magic and Wicca since I was a teenager. My interest has come and gone over the years, sometimes I’ve been focused on other things. Since 2010 I’ve celebrated the sabbats, usually by making food and drink (I have a good book called The Real Witches’ Kitchen by Kate West that inspired me).
I like watching the seasons turn and lately I’ve been reflecting on them more. I’ve also been more paying attention to the moon cycles lately. Thank you for the suggestions you gave for feeling more connected to the divine.
Hi Moonsparkle,
Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it.
I think Wicca is fascinating, and I also love observing the cycles of the seasons and the Moon. 🙂
