One of the most common complaints I hear is that resistance is just too hard to overcome.
I’ve tried my best throughout my various posts to give tips of how to overcome resistance. But, the question remains, what do you do when it is just way too much?
What do you do when you feel like you are drowning in a sea of resistance—when you can’t seem to see a way out of it?
We know that the Universe can’t give you what you’re not putting out there energetically. So, it becomes a bit of a catch-22: have resistance, react to the resistance, which creates more resistance, which causes you to react more strongly to the resistance, and so on.
Surely there’s an out? Surely there’s a way to circumvent this issue of resistance?
The Problem of Focus
The problem stems from the power of our focus.
For most people, things are running relatively smoothly. Perhaps there are some issues here and there that they’d like to improve, but overall, life is okay.
They have subconscious programs that serve them, if not ideally, then at least adequately. And, since most people are creating by default, just focusing on whatever life brings them, then life carries on as always, neither getting much better nor much worse.
But sometimes, you’ve been dealt a bad program. You have some bug in your subconscious programming that keeps getting triggered, and it’s creating undesirable results in your life.
When this happens, it becomes a perpetual cycle. This “bug”, if you will, is triggered by some event in your life. It causes an emotional reaction, which is at the root of all creation. The emotional reaction sends energy out to the Universe, creating more undesirable experiences in outer reality, which trip up your subconscious bug, and the cycle begins all over again.
In this situation, creating by default is really not very effective. It’s just going to lead you further and further into this cycle. And of course, the longer you’ve been in the cycle, the harder it is to break it.
I was actually very social for a lot of my childhood. That all started to change around the time I entered middle school, all thanks to a couple of unfortunate events. Those unfortunate events created some subconscious program that said, “I’m worthless, and no one likes me.”
That program got worse and worse all through high school. It got to the point that I started to self-harm. Not frequently, but enough.
It took me several years to get out of that cycle. It wasn’t fast or easy. Going to college helped a lot, as I made a lot of new friends. Meeting Christine helped even more. But, I wasn’t totally rid of it until just a few years ago.
My point in telling this story is to say that firstly, I know how it is. And secondly, there is definitely a way out. Yes, it took me years, but I believe that with the tools I have today, it could have been much faster.
It’s always going to be a challenge, and may very well take some time. But, it is possible.
The Prime Delusion of Ego
These subconscious bugs stem from one, and only one, source: the ego’s belief that we are separate individuals.
The ego believes that we are on our own—that because of this, the world is scary and threatening. And so, it sets up all sorts of defenses to protect against these imagined threats.
But, the defenses hurt more than they help. They seal us off from the flow of Universal Energy.
You see, when the ego tries to control the world around it, it inherently mistrusts the Universal Flow. It labels certain things as good or desirable, and other things as bad or undesirable. And, moreover, it tries to push away that which is undesirable, and hold close that which is desirable.
Sound familiar? That’s unfortunately how most people approach the law of attraction, and it just doesn’t work.
It seems like it should, at first inspection. Obviously there are certain experiences that you desire, and certain other experiences that you’d rather not have.
But, when the ego gets involved in these desires, it’s more than just desirable or undesirable—wanted or unwanted. It becomes a matter of survival—of life or death. If the unwanted thing happens, the ego fears annihilation.
This stems from the unconscious mind, which rules over your primitive instincts. It is where your fight-or-flight instinct comes from.
But, a lot of times, that unconscious mind becomes overactive. It activates the fight-or-flight instinct even for situations that are not remotely dangerous.
For instance, say you see someone that you’re interested in. You’d like to ask them out, but the unconscious mind kicks into overdrive and fight-or-flight is activated. It’s not just a mild discomfort, but an all-out trepidation. This could literally keep you from a relationship for years, if not resolved.
Or, say you have a fear of unpleasant financial surprises, like the car suddenly needing expensive repairs. Even when things are good, the unconscious mind is constantly watching out for the slightest sign of things going wrong. Consequently, you’re perpetually focused on the unwanted, and so unwanted things start to happen. After a while, you might just think you’re unlucky, but in reality, you’ve been creating these situations all on your own.
These all come from the ego’s defenses. It pushes away the unwanted (rejection by a love interest, expensive repairs on the car, etc), and holds on to the wanted (having a relationship, achieving financial abundance, etc).
Or at least, it tries to. Because it’s based in ego consciousness, it doesn’t actually quite work out that way.
The ego tries to be the sole creator. It tries to control everything all on its own. But, of course it cannot.
When you try to filter out the Universal Flow, things become rather stuck. It would be like having a GPS, but then refusing to listen to its directions. You think you know better, so you just start taking whatever turns seem the best.
The Universal Flow is your GPS. But, the ego wants to dictate the best way to get to the destination. When it thinks the Universe has made a mistake, it throws a tantrum and does its own thing instead. And, you’re left more lost than when you started.
Leave It to the Universe
I recently started reading a series of books called Jeeves, by P. G. Wodehouse. It’s about a man called, well, Jeeves. He’s the butler to a rather wealthy man named Bertie Wooster.
Anyway, Bertie isn’t the brightest, and regularly gets himself into trouble. But, Jeeves is always there to figure a way out of any situation.
One of the things Bertie starts to say is, “Leave it to Jeeves!” since he’s always the one to come to Bertie’s rescue.
It reminded me of how we should be with the Universe. When we try to handle it just with the ego, we get into more trouble than we started with. When we let go of the desire and let the Universe take care of it for us, then things end up far better than they would have otherwise.
But, just like Bertie, we tend to try to do it on our own, anyway, because we think we know better, or don’t quite trust the Universe to do it for us.
But, think back through your life. Can you truly say that things ended up better when you tried to take care of every little detail yourself, or when you gave it up to the Universe?
The great majority of this work is simply about letting go and leaving it to the Universe.
It’s hard at first, I know. Heck, I still find myself trying to figure out all the details sometimes. But, it’s necessary.
I know how it is. You find yourself faced by what appears to be an insurmountable problem. Your ego does what ego does best (or worst): you try to figure it out. You try to figure out some way of resolving this problem. Of course, it seems impossible, so you are left feeling anxious.
Since you’re focused on the problem, you are just resonating with that problem, and inviting more things like it into your life.
But, if you trust the Universe, and let go of the problem, then you can simply focus on the solution, and so create more of that in your life instead. And, the Universe finds the shortest path to the solution you have been focusing on.
The ego itself isn’t bad, it can just be used improperly. The proper use of ego is to focus on what you want to create. The improper use is to try to take over the Universe’s role and figure it all out yourself.
The first way is a lot less stressful, trust me. 🙂
I can’t even count how many times I’ve been worried about not having enough money for this or that bill, only to have the Universe come through at the last moment. It has always come through for me, no matter what. The more I have let go, the faster it would act, of course.
Over time, I just started to build up that trust. If you have a friend who’s always there for you, then you begin to trust that they will always be there for you. That’s how it is for me with the Universe, at least mostly. 😛
Your Place in the Universe
But what do you do when you don’t have that trust yet? That’s really the root of the problem, as I see it.
I invite you to build your connection with the Universe.
Start by just witnessing the little ways the Universe works in your life every day. Your ego will be tempted to put these down to “coincidence”, but rest assured that there is no such thing.
Simply invite the Universe to show itself to you through your everyday experiences. Set the intention when you first get up in the morning, or really at any point throughout the day.
Then, just observe. I guarantee within a day or two, you’ll start to notice something.
This is just a beginning. A relationship with the Divine cannot be rushed, but it will respond to you, if you invite it to do so. It will never force you to acknowledge its presence, of course.
I also recommend meditating, or otherwise connecting with the Divine, daily. When you start to get in touch with the inner peace that is your essential nature, your outer problems start to appear not so problematic after all. This is the first thing I recommend for all of my spiritual coaching clients from the first session onward.
Then, you may feel inspired to add on other practices, too. That’s totally up to you and your personal connection with the Divine. Personally, I’ve been feeling led to Paganism and a more intimate observance of the cycles of nature. It helps me to feel more connected to the Universe, and discover my place in nature.
I plan on discussing this topic at much greater length in Thursday’s post, but this is a good introduction. I simply recommend reaching out to the Divine and just seeing what happens. Allow the Universe to answer your invitation. Then, just let that connection grow naturally.
Once you have that deeper connection, the egoic need to hang on to your desires with a death grip will start to fall away. You’ll see that there are more important things in the world, and that you are always supported, anyway. This will be the time at which your manifestations really start to flourish, because by letting go of them, you’ve given them the freedom to actually manifest in your life fully.
How About You?
Now it’s your turn. Are you stuck in a perpetual cycle of ever-growing resistance? Has this given you some ideas of how to overcome your resistance? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Hi Brandon,
Focussing on solutions doesn’t feel good. Nothing feels good. So there’s still no change for me. Can’t create the good feeling. Even drugs don’t work.
Maybe if you just visualize what you want whilst feeling horrible it can still manifest. I’ll try that.
Hi CJ,
No, please don’t try that. That would be even worse.
When I say to focus on the solution, I mean simply the feeling of it. If you cannot get there right now, do what I said about connecting with the Divine. That’s really the most important here, and will help your ego to learn how to let go a bit.
Life’s such a brutal thing though. If you relax and surrender, it may well destroy you. Type into Google images “Syrian war victim”, and tell me if Life is supporting these bloodied, mangled, tortured corpses. Is it? No, it’s not.
I’m sorry you feel that way, CJ. I cannot, of course, speak to anyone else’s experience. But my own experience is that life has been nothing but supportive.
I’ve also observed that the more we let go, the more supportive life is, contrary to your claim above. But all you can do is to test it out for yourself.
So tell me, in your own life, how has life been brutal? What has happened when you’ve truly let go?
Just a worsening of feelings of anxiety/loneliness/depression/anguish.
What do you think of acting? eg. acting like a successful person. Sometimes I feel like I can get that working a little bit.
Hi CJ,
Really, whatever works for you. I’d be careful of faking it too much, as sometimes we can repress those negative emotions under a façade of happiness. But, if you’re careful to avoid that, then it could work.
I would try to find a modality that works for you to release resistance and anxiety. I’ve had success with what I’ve called radical acceptance, but also The Sedona Method® is a great one. Others have had great success with tapping. NLP is also a good one, which I demonstrated in the class I just taught recently.
But, find what works for you. There’s something obviously holding you in this place of anxiety. It’s up to you to find the way out. The Universe will help, but you have to take the initiative.
Thank you.
Tiny breakthrough. Acting didn’t work, but I used a technique where I amplify the symptoms. ie/ purposefully try to make them worse, which has the reverse effect.
Has given me a slight relief.
That’s great, CJ! It’s just that sort of trial and error you’ll have to try to find what works for you. It’s different for everyone. 🙂

This post really resonated with me because I was in the midst of an interpersonal situation that I didn’t like, and I had spent days trying to figure out what to say to create peace with this person while not living up to their expectations. I realize now that I had been trying to fix the problem in every detail with my ego, thinking that if I could just find the right words beforehand, the issue would go away. Now I can recognize that if there are any “right” words, the universe will supply them much more effectively if I’m relaxed instead of controlling the situation. And maybe no conversation is even needed to create peace with this person! It might come about some other way.
At times like this, it is actually kind of reassuring that your life might be sort of “stuck” and that you mostly get the same things over and over, because then I think, “Well, I usually don’t have any sort of argument with this person, so probably things will go back to that state pretty soon. Either that, or they’ll move out of my life and someone similar will come in.” Ideally, I’d focus on having a much better relationship, or reaching a new level of closeness now that I’ve been more honest with them, but I found that pretty hard to do in this case. I was able to reassure myself that “probably in a week or two things will be back to normal,” though, and that felt good. Maybe when I’ve let go of more of the resistance, I can focus on something better than the status quo, but right now, this is as far as I can get most of the time, haha.
Great post! It was really well timed for me.
Hey Lisa,
Thanks so much for your comment. I am glad that the post resonated with you. 🙂
Yes, the ego likes to try to figure things out, and unfortunately it usually doesn’t work. I’m glad you’re finding some peace in the situation you mentioned. Arguments with others can especially be difficult to iron out.
You’re absolutely right that the perfect way to resolve the situation will become apparent. I’ve had this happen countless times, but it’s still amazing to me when it happens. 🙂
This has nothing to do with the blog post, but these days I’ve realized just how much magic there is in our lives, it’s just that we’re so used to it as being “common” or “normal”, that we fail to see its incredible presence.
Just the other day I found out how the continents are connected, regarding internet and phone. It’s submarine cables that run through oceans and connect continents! I mean, that’s freaking incredible by itself, since the distance between e.g. North America and Europe is huge. Not only that, but each time I try opening a website located on servers in America, data starts traveling from my laptop through air via wifi to the router, then it runs so freaking fast all across countries, until it reaches the Atlantic ocean shore, then it starts flowing through the underwater cable across the entire Atlantic ocean, it reaches the North American continent, and travels through many states, until it reaches the servers, which are often in California. Then the data quickly gets exchanged, and gets sent back to me, through many states to the shore, then through the massive Atlantic until it reaches the shore, then back through countries again, and then to my ISP, then to my router, and then through wifi/air to my laptop. All that usually in just a few seconds!
When you start paying attention to this, it really is jaw-dropping. I just can’t believe how the whole planet is so connected. And also the fact that I didn’t know about those submarine cables until recently.
Hi Z,
I agree completely. I’ve also been paying a lot more attention to the magic that’s all around us. Magic infuses everything, even that which seems the most mundane.
I mentioned this on the forum I think, but on Saturday night, I went outside to acknowledge and appreciate the full moon. I can’t see it myself—though Christine can a bit—but I can feel the energy of it. And that to me is very magical.
But yes even something as simple as the internet is magical. The fact that we didn’t even have the hint of anything like this 50 or 60 years ago is astonishing. Things have progressed extremely quickly.
I remember my life 3 months back where everything was dark. But then light came and it was very very bright. Since then I just don’t know what to complain about.
But you know what was the hardest part for me Brandon …. its to find deep rooted beliefs , realizing them , accepting them and then letting them go. Eveything is very confusing at first . And of course to find out what is that you want and what’s stopping you from getting that.
Two things you told in your previous posts changed me a lot and made things so smooth. First one was to go with the flow and second to watch your reactions to outer situations. That’s keeps you aware of what you are doing from moment to moment. Thank you so much for those great insights.
I am free from most of my fears and doubts. But sometimes I feel impatient :(. Just don’t know when things will start coming up. I want to ask you that besides feeling confident about your intention is it possibles there could be a time lag? Universe needs time to arrange things ? And is it ok not to think about intention everyday and just let it go completely?
Thank you another great post :).
What a beautiful comment, Rhea! If I can ask, what started to make the difference in your life to bring you to where you are now?
To answer your question, yes sometimes it can take time. But, it sounds like you are manifesting evidence of your impatience. The more you notice that impatience, the more life will reflect that back to you.
If you have resistance, I generally do recommend focusing on your goal once per day. It helps you to familiarize your unconscious mind with your goal, so it can feel safer and more familiar to you. But, of course you can do whatever feels best to you.
But, after you focus on it for a few minutes, be sure to let it go entirely. Try not to think about it excessively, worrying about when it is going to come.
I hope this helps. 🙂
Thank you for you reply ????. Yeh may be you are right. I m giving more attention to my impatience. I will work on that.
Well what changed me was first my will to get out of where I was. Then strong realization of how much blessed I am. Everything is so fine. Universal ‘Gods’ loved me so much and always always helped me whenever I needed them. My childish friend ‘ego’ hammered me with silly beliefs but thanks to my higher self who saved me. And gave me impulses to Search few things. That’s how I found your blog.
And I realized that I have some gifts to share. I want to give something back. Want to multiply my happiness. That feeling just started series of good things. And that’s how I am here :). Thank you.
Thanks, Rhea. That’s wonderful, and I really appreciate you sharing your experience.
Thanks to you Brandon. your teachings helped me a lot ????.
“It’s hard at first, I know. Heck, I still find myself trying to figure out all the details sometimes. But, it’s necessary”. Do you mean it is unnecessary? I think there is a typo here. It may seem trivial, but to me this is an important sentence in the post.
The moon is indeed magical. Everything is. Some people are annoying, but I accept them and things as they are.
Oh, one thing about being super social. You also attract bad and good people, so it is best to always keep good company and not bad, even for the sake of keeping it. Be selective in who you hang out with.
This post sounded like a master indeed! And yes, when I was not even thinking of or planning things, the Universe brought things even better that I could possibly had imagined, so the best thing to do is want it but not obsess about it. This brings Les Miserables to mind. The guy who was obsessed with capturing Jean Valjean, what happened to him in the end? It is pretty fruitless, wasting his life that way when Valjean had a full life.
Thanks, Kat.
The “it” in “it’s necessary” refers to the necessity of letting go. Sorry for the confusion. I meant that letting go can be hard, but it is necessary.
I agree about wanting it but not obsessing about it. It’s like what I said in the class, turning it into a Self-based desire, not an ego-based desire. When you’re connected with the Divine, then the desires don’t matter so much anymore. They’re cool, but not life-altering.

I was wondering what you think about Melody’s “letter to the universe” method. I tried it several times, and sometimes I had success, sometimes not, so I’m not even sure if the success was due to the method or not.
Hi Z,
I never quite resonated with that method. I’d say that if you don’t resonate with it, then don’t use it. 🙂
