When you learn how to wield a power like the law of attraction, you realize that you are in control. You get to set the tone of your own reality.
Or at least, that’s ideally what would happen. Unfortunately, all too many people I meet with still have this mentality of life happening to them. Life becomes out of control, totally opposed to what they want life to look like.
It’s a tricky thing. To those new to these principles, life can certainly seem unpredictable and out of our control. And indeed, I’ve said many times that as long as the ego is the one trying to control life, it won’t work.
But once you’re able to step into your true Self, and live from that perspective, then you start to see that life begins and ends with you. You are the creator and the experiencer of life.
The question is, how do you step into your role as creator?
Stop Reacting to Life
When you react to life, you are giving away your own power.
What exactly do I mean by “react”? I mean that when unwanted experiences happen in life, you react emotionally.
Imagine that you get an unexpected bill in the mail. Reacting to life means that you panic, become anxious, or get angry at your situation.
These seem like perfectly reasonable responses, right? And indeed, I wouldn’t blame you for having them.
But you have to understand something about emotions. I’ve said before that emotions are the language of the Universe. You teach the Universe what to give you more of by the emotions that you focus on.
So, when you react to that unexpected bill with anxiety, you are teaching the Universe to bring you more things that cause anxiety.
Not only this, but when you react with anxiety to this situation, you are also training your subconscious mind to react with anxiety every time you find yourself in similar situations, which makes it easier and easier to create more situations like this.
It’s easy to see that you can quickly find yourself in a bit of a perpetual cycle of lack.
To take another example, say that your crush rejects you. You feel hurt, perhaps even worthless.
Just as above, if you allow these negative emotions to fester, you’ll soon find yourself attracting more situations like this.
Now think about how many experiences in your everyday life you have a negative emotional reaction to. Perhaps someone cuts you off in traffic, you are called by a bill collector, your boss annoys you, and the list goes on.
No, maybe you’re not focusing a lot on these emotions, but we all know how quickly our day can go from fine to downright terrible just with a few frustrating events. Each negative experience just adds a bit more to the overall balance of negativity. And, the more you allow that negative balance to grow, the more you attract these unwanted experiences.
As I said, this is how most people are living life, unfortunately.
If you’re among them, then how do you change it?
End Your War with Life
After a while, this reactive posture creates a defensive attitude within us.
I find that most people who have this reactive posture also have a deep mistrust of life.
Of course, this mistrust stems from the ego. The ego believes in lack and separation. It believes that life can hurt you, and so it is at war with life.
But, the more you are at war with life, the more you create whatever life brings you. When you resist what is, you get more of what is.
There’s simply no such thing as saying “no” to life, or a part of life. When something unwanted happens and you say “no” to that thing with your focus and your negative emotions, you are saying “yes” to more of that.
The only casualty in your war against life is your own idea of the reality you want to create. As long as you are at war with life, you simply cannot create the reality you desire.
I know some people might say that life is cruel, and so of course they would resist it.
But, it’s a catch-22. As I said, the more you resist it, the more you create it. You can’t wait for life to get better, before you stop resisting it. You have to be the one to act first.
Life is just a mirror of whatever you are holding within. The mirror can’t do anything but reflect. If you don’t like what’s in the mirror, you can’t argue with the mirror. I mean, you could, but it’d be futile. Instead, you have to change that which is being reflected.
Most people are going around arguing with the mirror. They don’t like what they see, so they argue more and more insistently, which makes the reflection more and more of the unwanted.
Then they say they won’t stop arguing until the mirror stops showing them an unwanted reflection.
Do you see why this is ineffective?
You Are Life
Being at war with life sets up a duality between the ego and the rest of life. But, you are life itself. You are part of the Universal Flow. When you deny life, you are denying a part of yourself.
You see, the law of attraction is not about forcing your idea of reality onto life. It is about becoming the flow, and gently suggesting your creation to that flow. Because, your desire is part of that flow. There is no need for it to be at odds with it.
This is what I mean when I talk about living from the true Self. Become part of that flow, and allow your desire to naturally take form in your reality.
You never have to be against life. The very idea of being against life is going to set up resistance, which will only create unwanted experiences.
As long as you give up that resistance, life will support you. It’s actually quite beautiful how the Universe will support you, once you stop resisting it. It is meant to support your every need and desire.
But, that cannot be part of your experience until you take the first step and actually surrender to the flow of life.
Surrendering to the flow does not mean losing control. It does not mean giving up all of your desires. It does not mean you don’t want life to be a certain way.
It means allowing the Universe to do 99% of the work, as it was meant to. Your job is to create, and that is it.
It means being okay no matter what happens, because you know that the Universe is supporting you fully.
It means simply letting go and allowing, because you know that life is inherently friendly.
Setting the Tone of Life
You get to set the tone. You get to create whatever it is that you want, provided you don’t resist what is here already.
How do you actually do that? How do you stop reacting, and proactively create the kind of life you want?
It comes by deliberate use of the emotions.
As I said, the emotions are the language of the Universe. When you allow life to dictate what emotions you will feel, you give up your creative power.
By no means am I saying to demonize your negative emotions. Resisting them would just create more of the same.
What I’m saying is that you have control over whether you continue to experience them or not. By completely accepting them for what they are, and then gently shifting your focus to something better, you create reality as you want it to be.
It’s a bit complicated, so I’ll return to the two examples I used earlier.
Imagine you get that unexpected bill in the mail. Initially, you feel panicked and anxious.
Realizing that this will only create more of what you don’t want, you know that you must find a way to change it. However, to reject or resist the feeling will only make it last even longer.
So, you accept that this feeling is here right now. You even surrender to the feeling, because you realize that it is just stuck energy wanting to be expressed.
As the feeling alleviates, you decide what you will focus on instead.
You decide that you’d like to focus on the reality where you have plenty of money to meet this unexpected expense. Since there must be a parallel reality where your desire is true, you know that it is possible.
So, you simply enter the feeling state of having more than enough money. Every time your thoughts wander to worrying about this bill, you gently redirect them to this new reality you’d rather create.
The more you do so, the more you train your subconscious mind to react in a similar way in situations like this one, and the more you teach the Universe that you want a reality where there is plenty of money to meet all expenses.
You see, you fully accepted the negative emotion, allowing that energy to vent. Then, you used the power of your emotions to enter the state of abundance, in order to create more of that reality.
Let’s take the example of your crush rejecting you. As a result, you feel rejected and worthless.
- You allow those feelings to express themselves
- You choose a reality where you meet your perfect partner
- You feel that feeling of love and being loved
- You redirect your thoughts to that reality whenever they venture to the unwanted reality
Do you see what is happening? You are not allowing life to dictate how you will feel. You decide how you want to feel, and life reflects that right back to you. If you feel abundant, life will reflect back abundance. If you feel loved, life will reflect back to you love.
But, it all has to start with you. You have to set the tone of your reality, by feeling the way you want to feel, and the way you want life to inspire you to feel through your experiences.
That is your power. This is all you have to do. The details are left up to the Universe, because that simply isn’t your job. Just feel the way you want to feel, and that will set the Universal Flow into motion to create more experiences like that.
Develop Awareness of Your Inner State
With the above in mind, you’ll see the importance of having a constant mindfulness of your inner state. Any time your state starts to dip into the negative, you’ll immediately become aware that you are creating more negative experiences in your life.
Plus, when you catch it early, it is much easier to let go and redirect to what you’d rather be feeling.
This is not just to do with your specific manifestations. Your inner state is creating your reality moment-by-moment, not just when you are doing LOA techniques. This is a 24×7 way of life.
I recommend, from the moment you awake, simply doing an inner inventory, so to speak. Ask yourself, “How do I feel right now?” Check if there is any hint of a negative state within you.
I imagine it as a spectrum, ranging from 100% negative and 0% positive, to 100% positive and 0% negative. I might ask myself, “How negative is my state at this moment?” If it is, say, 20% negative, I will work on releasing it, often by simply noticing the existence of that negativity, and letting it go.
The goal is to get to as close to 0% negative as possible. If you are still working through a lot of resistance in your everyday life, this might not be feasible for you, and that is okay. Even just being aware of your state at any given moment will do much to help you change it. But, do not beat up yourself if you can’t do it perfectly on day 1. This is a process.
Do the same thing as you go throughout your day. If something happens that triggers a negative state, do the above to return to equilibrium.
The important thing to realize is that your emotional state is vital. Carrying around a negative state is like running your car on empty. Perhaps you can ignore it for a while, but eventually, it’ll make itself known to you, probably in not such a pleasant way.
But, many of us treat our emotional state as incidental to life, not as the central part of the creation process that it is. Put prime importance on how you feel at any moment, and you will quickly see your life improving.
It’s all about being deliberate. Make the decision now to be more deliberate about your emotional state. Only then will you begin to get predictable results with the law of attraction. You will then have become a deliberate creator, no longer the reactor to life that you once were.
How About You?
Now it’s your turn. How proactive are you in life? Do you deliberately choose to create, or do you simply react to what life brings your way? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Hi,
Life does inflict horrors on people – an inescapable fact. But I guess the idea is to understand that it inflicts horrors on people who don’t trust it and surrender to it. And if you do trust, maybe things will start to work out. It’s the same dynamic as trusting someone who has hurt you deeply and repeatedly and cruelly.
Hi CJ,
Yes, bad things certainly happen. But as you say, it stems from resistance, not from life itself.
I understand it’s hard to begin trusting. However, you have to find a way to make the first move. It just doesn’t work any other way. Even if that move is very small, that’s okay. It’s the beginning of progress.
Got it! Very nice post. I think I’m practicing this more and more and it’s becoming second nature.
So, instead of asking the question “how is like treating you”, we should ask “how are you treating life”, or “this is how I want life to treat me or how I want to be treated”. This is how people command the room.
I’ve seen this many times. Someone’s car was once towed and he simply remained calm throughout the whole thing. Pretty cool.

Another thing comes to mind. Had a bad experience? Don’t rehash it. Just do not. forget about it. Also, in time, you can change that story and tell another one and end up changing the past altogether.
Hi Kat,
Exactly. Don’t rehash it. It’s why I’m often suspicious of traditional therapy, because it is usually all about rehashing old trauma.
In my coaching, I rarely allow the client to go into the story. Sometimes I will for a few minutes to get an idea of where they are, but then I will interrupt them and let them know that’s not useful for them to be doing.
It can sometimes seem a bit harsh, but it’s necessary. It’s a pattern interrupt. And, anything that can break that pattern is beneficial.
As I’ve said before, we’re not trying to ignore reality as it is, but simply reframing it in a better context.
I love your example of the guy who remained calm. That’s exactly it. 🙂
Brandon, when I have my story interrupted I feel so worthless you wouldn’t believe it’s possible. I’ve had this my whole life – people saying “oh no that’s negative… stop that”, and it adds resistance to the problem, making everything 100x worse. What I need is for someone in this goddamn world to allow my pain, but no one will do that. They all want to fix you. I’ve seen a mix of about 25 therapists, psychiatrists and ‘coaches’ and they all try to change you. That’s resistance, and it just creates so much more pain in me.
Hi CJ,
I do tailor my approach to each individual client. Some, I allow to vent. Others, I do not. It just depends on where they are and what’s going on with them.
But, it does require a balance of expression and redirection. You may need some time to express what is there already, but then you must redirect your focus to what you want to create. It all just depends.
I had a similar sort of experience, except psychiatrists and the like didn’t tell me, “Stop being negative,” they said, “Oh, just sit with the suffering and allow it, and it will pass.” Now I suppose that’s good advice for some people, but like Brandon said, you need to tailor advice to the individual, and like CJ said, psychiatrists and the like can just add to your resistance and make things worse if they give bad advice. The message I got from them was, “Your struggle against the suffering in the world is bad. Stop your bad struggling, just let it walk all over you.” Well, that just made me struggle against the struggling, and I got nowhere. I allowed my sadness for years and it didn’t go anywhere. It wasn’t until I said, “Screw this, I am not sitting with my suffering anymore. I am sick of allowing all this sadness,” that I started to get better. In hindsight, I can see that in my anger I sort of stopped resisting my resistance. I decided it was okay, even GOOD, to just be resistant and be mad at how much pain there was in the world and to refuse to allow the sadness. That was the part that psychiatrists and people like that either didn’t know about or didn’t explain well. They said allow the pain, but they didn’t say much about what to do when that doesn’t work or when you have resistance about allowing. So I think even advice about allowing has to be nuanced, at least in some cases.
Eventually I was able to move on to more pleasant emotions, haha, and now life is pretty good. But I always keep in mind that moment when getting mad at the releasing technique and ditching it made things turn around. (Again, you could say it was sort of a halfway release technique I had to ditch, not the genuine one, since they didn’t adequately discuss resistance to allowing.)
Hi Lisa,
That’s a good point. Of course, I do often talk about allowing here, but as you say, it is nuanced. I find that not only does there need to be allowing, but also the redirection of the mind to the wanted. To just focus on allowing, and that’s it, can mean getting stuck in that place without any direction.
Hi Lisa,
Yes, spot on. It’s the helper’s job to do the allowing no matter what presents. When your shrink gave you instructions to ‘allow’, he was in effect judging against your resistance, making it worse. They just don’t get it – all they do is make their patients worse. For some ‘helpers’, that’s quite a good thing financially. Huge fees coupled with a “it takes a lot of time” mantra and they get to pay off the beach house very quickly. It’s a huge bloody scam.
I’ve been thinking about this a bit more over night. The critical element is whether the advice to ‘allow’ is given with-
1) a vibration of fear (“we better do this otherwise you won’t improve…and I don’t cope very well when my patients don’t improve), or …
2) a vibration of clinging (“come onnnnn, you can do it! Please! I want to see change occur”).
But I don’t think advice is ever really the way to start anything, and that’s where these helper professions stuff up. The highest level of healing is to simply walk into a room with deep presence, without directives, without instructions, without clinging and fear. Change simply HAS to unfold in such an environment.
I totally agree with this, CJ. It’s the energy of the coach/therapist that facilitates healing and inner change, not the words themselves. I’ve noticed this many times in my own practice.

When I asked you about developing my extroverted side, you told me that setting the intention would be the way to go. Setting an intention of being open and communicative. Is it okay also if I set the intention of having friends and spending time with them? I know that the former is about me, but what about the latter kind of intention? Does it come from ego or my true self?
Hi Z,
You can’t tell where the intention comes from just by what kind of intention it is. It all depends on how you feel about it. An intention for friends sounds like a perfectly reasonable intention to hold, though. 🙂 Simply enter the feeling state of having friends, of having fun with them, of having people to support you, or whatever that looks like to you.
I see, thanks Brandon!
Brandon, what happens when you can’t create a good feeling about any desire? When all desires are depressed so deeply that you no longer access feelings of excitement or achievement?
Hi CJ,
A few things:
First, find the best-feeling state that you can access. It doesn’t have to be wonderful or ecstatic. Even a bit of a loosening of the grip on your resistance can really help.
Second, start small. Find something minor in your everyday life that you enjoy. It might be reading a book, surfing the web, or something else. Just something small that you enjoy. Practice the good feeling you get from that.
Third, I highly recommend coaching. I can help you dig into this resistance a lot more and see what’s going on beneath the surface. There are a lot of techniques I never discuss here on the blog, which can really help.
Thanks again. How much is the coaching per hour?
Hi CJ,
I do offer an initial free breakthrough session to get a better idea of how my coaching works. Beyond that, a single session is $200, and a package of 3 is $550. There are also larger packages available.

Great post !!! I think whenever we feel negative feelings life tries to tell us that we need to change something and change it for our own good. If it all would have been happy happy then I don’t think anybody would have bothered about doing anything and it would have been so boring. I really like the beauty of all emotions. We understand importance of good because bad exists. And sometimes I think I am so lucky to be born as a human because if I wouldn’t then I would have never understood depth and intensity of some beautiful feelings like love , kindness, humanity and joy.
I like what you said about accepting and going with current flow. That brings you lot of peace and create lots of space to fill life with the things u want. It saves lots of energy to invest in something good. Recently I read one quote I liked it so much
All the problems have stuck between “mind” and “matter”. If you don’t “mind” it doesn’t “matter”.
Thank you Brandon.
Wonderful comment, Rhea. 🙂
Yes, all emotions are valuable. It’s all about surrendering to the flow. Then the negative emotions will have fulfilled their purpose and will move on.
I agree it’s a great thing to be born as a human. There are so many wonderful experiences to be had here. 😀
I don’t recall who, but I think someone mentioned that when a human dies, he /she won’t reincarnate into an animal or plant. How come? Animals have much less resistance than humans, right? So where’s the logic?
Animals are lower lifeforms than humans. Yes they are more resistant, but it is because they have less capacity for reasoning.
The thing that makes a human a human, with all the capacity to grow spiritually, is the combination of the conscious, rational mind, as well as the more primitive subconscious and unconscious minds. All three, working together, is what makes us a creator.
Animals are still creators, but on a much, much smaller scale than a human being.
That makes sense, thank you.

When I wake up in the morning I am usually extremely anxious in a generalized way. Sometimes it’s really really bad, sometimes not so much. At first I was paralyzed by it. In fact, sometimes I still am and I just lay there and say, this is so bad that I can’t take it. But I’m slowly finding that when I let it be for a little while and if it’s still there and is going to interfere with my day, I make myself sit up and start tapping. EFT tapping is amazing, at least for me. There are a few incredible tapping experts I trust and do it with on their videos on YouTube, and there is always a subject that fits what I need to deal with to help me pivot towards a positive focus and feel better quickly.
The other day I tapped for maybe an hour in the morning and felt my vibration going up so high. I felt lighter, the anxiety was gone and I was able to accept my circumstances and get into a place of focusing because it’s impossible to focus when you’re anxious or panicking. So then I can be calm and confident enough to get mindful (I do mindfulness meditation at night), my resistance is down and I’m able to move to Step 2 just for a little while and focus lightly on my desire. Or, as Brandon really hit it, if I get a big or unexpected bill for instance, and start to freak out, I’m now able, with the help of different modalities or “tools” such as tapping and hopefully others that I plan to learn more about such as NLP, to sort of bypass the negativity while not pushing against it. And at least for a little while get to an abundant feeling and revel in it until I start to feel resistance. And that’s fine. I just go back to Step 1 and that is comforting because I know I’m safe and will get back to Step 2 again and stay longer and longer in those better feelings.
Because I’m having a lot of split energy manifestations right now, which started fairly recently after nothing for so long, I feel a shift, and rather than being afraid of getting these “good” and “challenging” manifestations, I’m seeing what the Universe wants to show me. Each manifestation has a reason behind it and the Universe is giving me whatever I’m creating. And sometimes I fall back into the negative and that’s exactly what I get and the better ones – well frankly, right now I don’t know where they’re coming from, but I’m not questioning it! LOL It’s cool because it’s an unchanging law. I know I have it in me to be the creator and get my frequency up to a place where the law gives me more of whatever it is I’m focusing on rather than being a prisoner of each story and issue hitting me after another and just doing the reacting thing.
That’s not living – it’s putting out fires and dancing to the ego’s music. But it certainly isn’t easy if you’ve lived a life of not really paying attention to your emotions.. Once you really start the process and stay consistent (again, consistent!), you communicate in a completely different way to the Universe and basically, without pushing against what is, you more forward towards those good feeling, knowing that the law always works for you and the Universe will always work in your favor – as long as you are proactive and begin to believe that it’s all Okay now and still stay in a state of expectation for great things to come. And the irony is that you have to surrender first, then things start to happen. But I’m still a rookie. Starting to look like quite a ride!
Hey Frann,
You really are doing a great job. I’ve enjoyed seeing your progress so far.
Yes, EFT can really be effective. There are so many modalities out there that can help with releasing resistance. It’s great that you’ve found some that work for you. 🙂
Thanks, Brandon! Your faith in me helps me to have faith and trust as well that I’m on the right path. You’re such a great teacher and caring person. It certainly makes a positive difference! To all of us I’m sure.
I just realized that “reactor” is an anagram of “creator”, that’s cool.
The new semester has started, and I’ve moved to a new apartment. There is no Internet here, which is tough for me. I’m glad that I can at least access it on my smartphone. I would like to intend and release, but there are too many things to intend. I want to intend a great Internet in this apartment, to pass exams that are coming in 3 weeks, to have friends, to be open to people without fear, to get inspired to resume a hobby of mine, etc. There are so many important things to intend, and I don’t know what to do. All are very important to me.
Hi Z,
In that case, just enter the feeling state of everything working out great for you. Then, focus more specifically on your more important goals, if you like. But as long as you access the vibrational state of everything working out for you, then it will.
Thanks Brandon. Today I just had to cry my eyes out. So many strong emotions hit me. I guess tomorrow’s a new day. Gonna find comfort in sleep tonight and hopefully tomorrow I can be more present, more carefree. I will try to do as you advised me.
