You probably already know that you can create your own reality via the law of attraction. This is becoming common knowledge today, at least more than it ever has been in the past.
However, the way that most people try to do it is backwards. They determine what they want, and then use exercises like visualizations and affirmations to try to manifest it.
If you’ve tried to do this, you’ve also probably seen that it doesn’t really work. Perhaps you have some success for things that don’t matter much to you, but for the really important things, you just get more frustration. Why is this?
You’re Doing It Backwards
The truth is, you are very probably using the law of attraction backwards.
When you are trying to use techniques to manifest your desires, quite often while you are doing this, you are focused on the lack of that desire being present.
You might say, “Well of course. I’ll feel better once my desire manifests.” But this is a common misconception.
If you want to create your own reality, the way to do that is not to focus on the lack of what you want. You might not realize you’re doing that, but that’s exactly what you’re doing when you are trying to “solve” a problem, or become happy by just getting this one thing. A lot of times people will use visualization and affirmation from a place of desperation, and they continue to get much of the same: more desperation.
This “solve the problem” mentality is only going to create more of the problem. You can’t speak of the problem without referring to the problem itself. You can’t get what you want as long as you are constantly focused on the lack of what you want.
This is a very common mistake, and it stems from a very simple misunderstanding:
Thoughts Don’t Become Things: Emotions Become Things
You hear all the time from various teachers of the law of attraction that thoughts become things. The more you think about your desire, the quicker it will come into your reality, right?
Wrong. If that were the case, we’d all be millionaires by now. Moreover, there wouldn’t be any poor people, because surely those who are poor think about money a great deal, and wishing they had more of it.
So there seems to be something missing in this formulation. And indeed there is. It is simply that thoughts don’t become things, but emotions do.
The material of manifestation is energy. All things are energy, and the way we deal with energy in our own lives will determine what manifestations we allow.
And, this universal energy couldn’t care less about thoughts. Thoughts are just words and symbols. They have no inherent meaning.
It is emotions that create the magnetism which makes the law of attraction work. Emotions are the glue of the universe. They make energy flow toward that which is like itself. An emotion of joy attracts energy that is attuned to the joy vibration. An emotion of fear will attract energy attuned to the fear vibration.
So perhaps it is better said: energy becomes things. But how is that energy attracted? By the emotions you focus on.
You are attracting energy every waking moment of your day. In essence, you create your own reality every single moment you are awake. This attracted energy becomes denser and denser, drawing more and more energy to itself, and eventually manifests as some experience in your life.
Have you ever noticed that when you’re having a bad day, it just seems to get worse and worse? It starts out with something minor, but then more minor things happen, and eventually everywhere you turn something bad is happening.
This demonstrates my point perfectly. You started out with some negative energy, attracted by some negative emotion. That negative energy caused yet another negative emotion, which you gave your focus to. That emotion drew yet more negative energy, and more negative emotions, on and on until you had a nice mass of negative energy clogging up your day.
You could say emotion is like a magnet. It pulls energy to it, which matches its own vibration. But, it doesn’t do this in a void, free of interaction. There is something that drives it along.
Are You Feeding Your Manifestation?
If emotions are the glue that keeps everything together, focus is the fuel that drives your manifestation.
Energy is always moving. It is never staying where it is. It is always going to be growing, or diminishing.
How do you make this energy grow, which will turn into your manifestation? You feed it with your focus on the emotion which attracted it in the first place.
It is like a magnifying glass, magnifying and focusing your creative power onto a single point, being your emotion. The longer you focus on that point, the more powerful it is going to get, and the more that will continue to attract that same vibration.
In essence, any time you give your focus to an emotion, or to a thought that an emotion has triggered, you are feeding the manifestation that will result in an experience that matches that same vibration. That is, if you focus on a positive emotion, you are feeding a positive manifestation. If you focus on a negative emotion, you are feeding a negative manifestation.
No matter what, you are using your creative potential to create your own reality. But, sometimes you do so unconsciously, and don’t like the result very much.
When you use your focus unconsciously, you are feeding a manifestation that you may not necessarily like.
However, you have full control over where you place your focus. If you don’t like the manifestation, then quit focusing on it.
Because, the inverse of feeding a manifestation, is starving that manifestation. When a negative manifestation enters your reality, obviously giving it more focus will just cause it to grow. But if you deliberately remove your focus, and place it somewhere else, you will starve that manifestation.
Like I said above, energy is always moving. It is either increasing or diminishing. It is being fed, or starved.
And the wonderful thing about this is that wherever you put your focus, does not need to have anything to do with the situation at hand. If you are worried about money, but instead of focusing on that worry, you focus on your favorite music, or a fun video game, you are still effectively starving that worry manifestation. And, you are also feeding a manifestation of enjoyment or fun.
That’s why a lot of law of attraction teachers recommend totally getting off the subject of your manifestation, when you aren’t able to focus on it in a positive way. It’s much better for you to totally get off the subject altogether, and starve any negative momentum that has built up, than to keep building negative momentum.
Create Your Own Reality by Using These Two Tools
So you have two essential tools you can apply when using the law of attraction:
- Emotion: to attract the manifestation you want to see more of in your life
- Focus: to control which emotions will play a role in this attraction
I’ll give an example to try to make things clear.
Imagine you want more money in your life. Most people will simply start visualizing more money, and using positive-sounding affirmations.
But now, we’ve learned that it’s not the thoughts that manifest your desires, but it is your emotions. If you simply use visualization and the like, without addressing the underlying emotions, you will just draw more of the same to you.
So what can we do? First, you look at the emotion that is already present. It’s most likely going to be worry, fear, and anxiety. Is it any wonder you want more money? You’re drawing to yourself experiences that feel like worry, fear, and anxiety.
So first, we can get off the topic. Use your power of focus to strengthen a positive manifestation in your life. What are you thankful for? Perhaps you have a nice home. Maybe you appreciate the loving relationship you’re in. Perhaps you can even appreciate the tasty meal you ate earlier. It doesn’t matter how small or big it is, just that you shift your focus.
As you do this, you are starving the worry-about-money manifestation, and feeding the positive manifestation you’ve chosen.
When you feel ready, perhaps think about the fact that you were able to go out to dinner last week, or that you had enough to pay the electric bill. Maybe you saved some money buying groceries recently, and that’s certainly a nice thing. Find anything at all to appreciate on the subject of money, but only when you’re ready.
If you catch yourself slipping into the negative focus, just redirect it to appreciation again. It will be hard at first, because you have all this negative momentum behind the worry-about-money manifestation, but the more you redirect your focus, the easier it will get. You will be building up positive momentum toward a new manifestation, and so it will gradually pick up inertia.
If you are really disciplined about doing this, then in a very short time, you will see your outer reality begin to change. Then you will have more to appreciate, which will help your manifestation to pick up even more momentum.
It Can Be Easy to Create Your Own Reality
It can be this simple to create your own reality. But it’s only simple when you actually learn the mechanics behind it. Otherwise you will just keep getting more frustrated.
As you hopefully see, most people are doing it backwards. They start with the desire, and hope the emotion will come later. But now you know that you have to start with the emotion, and then you will know that the desire will come later.
When you put the desire first, then your results will be haphazard at best. This is unconscious manifesting.
But when you put the emotion first, you will get the best results every single time. It can’t go any other way, because this is how the universe works.
It is really that simple, or at least it can be. Using the tool of your focus, and the magnetic power of your emotions, you can bring about any manifestation you choose.
The possibilities are endless. A manifestation is never done growing. The more you focus on it, the more it grows, and the more it grows, the more experiences will be manifested in your life which match that vibration. If you use those experiences to focus on the vibration even more, then the manifestation will just keep growing, picking up more and more momentum.
So it is your choice, and your choice alone. Look at your life, and see whether you are happy with what’s there. If not, then look at the emotion behind the manifestation. That’s the emotion you keep giving your focus to.
Stop giving your focus to things you don’t want, and start giving your focus to things you do want. Stop focusing on what’s right in front of you, if what’s right in front of you is something you don’t like. Choose to bring out another reality entirely, by focusing on the emotion that will attract that reality to you.
This is the power of creation, at your fingertips. You’ve done it unconsciously up to this point.
And even the above is only the basics. That’s why spiritual coaching can really help you to discover where you are building up negative momentum, and change your focus to something that will bring you better results.

The way I’ve manifest something, is to allow the energy to do the work. It is hard for me at times, because I am used to working at a certain speed naturally in life, but I find my still place, build emotion, and literally experience the situation through my higher self. I look for symbols from God to put into the manifestation. Then, I send the formed desired out filled with emotion, and the power of god, and allow it to unfold.
My greatest challenge is patience, dealing with the energy of past mistakes which have caused the situation I’m in now. They have done enough damage so that it can at times feel as if I’m running up hill.
However, it usually turns out rather well when the manifestation appears.

Thanks Justin. In essence it sounds similar to what I discussed here. You focus on the emotion of what you want, and feel that strongly. That is basically the essence of the manifestation process. I’m glad it seems to work for you. 🙂

Great article. I have a question about the LoA though.
When actors make themselves feel emotions, is that them trying to use the LoA? I mean, they feel an emotion, right? So it would bring more of that emotion into their life?
Kind of an odd question, but it’s something that always concerned me.
Thanks for commenting Cody.
I don’t think they’re trying to use the LOA. But does the law of attraction respond? Yes, of course. It responds to everything we do.
However, I wouldn’t be too concerned about it. Usually an actor is immersed in that emotion for a brief period of time. Though I think he should offset it by allowing the rest of his time to be positive.
Now certainly if someone is acting in something that is very negative all throughout, then perhaps that’s not a good idea. But again, it just depends on the particular circumstances. Our higher self will guide us away from anything that’s not good for us.
